MAIN CHARACTERS: Tony Stark, Christine Everhart

FIC SUMMARY: It’s been 'a hell of a year' since industrialist Tony Stark owned up to his alter ego in a move that stunned observers and longtime aides alike. With the US facing unprecedented homegrown suicide attacks, Iron Man's contribution to national security is more than ever under scrutiny. As she follows Stark during a year of crisis, exclusively for Vanity Fair, Christine Everhart explores the many contradictions of the man behind the mask, uncovers tales of personal loyalty, patriotism gone awry and corporate betrayal, and asks whether Iron Man is the embodiment of an outdated American fantasy—a self-made, unilateral, technological solution to hopelessly complex problems—and whether he can survive the violent encounter with reality.

RECCER'S NOTES: A mock Vanity Fair article on Iron Man. This is one of those fics that everyone must have surely read by now, but I have a grand total of six K titles in my faves list, so... Not that it doesn't deserve the publicity, because there's a small chance you haven't read this yet and if this is the case you should do so, immediately. It's that rare thing, a fic that really makes you stop and think, and then keep thinking long after you've finished reading. Plus! Photos, formatting, and a magazine writing style that makes me wibble.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Tony Stark, Pepper Potts, James 'Rhodey' Rhodes

FIC SUMMARY: What would have happened if Tony hadn't been born filthy rich? A military AU.

This rec has been floating around my flist lately, though it's not a new fic. I haven't seen it posted here yet (?) so -- enjoy! This is a fabulous, gritty, well researched story. I'm very picky with my AUs and this is absolutely one of the best I have ever read. I love Tony and Pepper's friendship here (you can maybe read a little more into it, but affectionate friendship is pretty much the limit of it, and it's tagged as gen). The other details of the fic, including how Iron Man ends up fitting into the world, are wonderfully done.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Tony Stark, Edwin Jarvis, Anna Jarvis, Peggy Carter, Maria Stark, Howard Stark, Paul Bettany

FIC SUMMARY: “First things first,” Tony says. “I loved A Knight’s Tale."

RECCER'S NOTES: Adorable framing of Tony's backstory. Which manages to be both fun and thoughtful. More complicated than a typical exploration of The Ways in Which Howard Sucked, with a nice glimpse at the women who would have been just as formative.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Tony Stark, James "Rhodey" Rhodes

FIC SUMMARY: "Shrapnel," Tony says, and alarms go off around his ears and he can’t breathe and the pain is going to eat him up from the head down. "In my heart. I made it. Not the shrapnel. ...Well. The shrapnel too."

RECCER'S NOTES: This is a great, heartbreaking missing scene from the first movie. It makes so much sense for there to be such a scene. Great characterization, and I love Tony and Rhodey's frienship.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Pepper Potts, Christine Everhart

FIC SUMMARY: One is the personal assistant to a billionaire-playboy-turned-superhero. The other is an ambitious journalist with a political conscience. Together, they fight crime!

RECCER'S NOTES: This was such a great idea to let the characters meet again like they did here. Love how Pepper and Christine become friends, and how they bond over something other than men or their jobs.

FIC SUMMARY: Tony has a close encounter of the robotic kind.

Don't ask me how this works, but it does! The amount of detail poured into the setting is perfect, as is Tony's voice. The thought of Tony Stark surrounded by dozens of friendly little robots is enough to put a grin on my face, and this fic is adorable.

Um, this is amazing. Matilda and Tony are both wonderful here - great voices, great banter between them. I love the idea of the two of them teaming up. Just a fabulous idea, executed really well.
