AUTHOR LINK: [archiveofourown.org profile] Ouroboros69 ([profile] ouroboros69)
RATING/WARNING(S): T | Graphic violence, some gore
WIP?/WORD COUNT: Complete | 26,300
MAIN CHARACTERS: Haruno Sakura, Hatake Kakashi, Uzumaki Naruto, Uchiha Sasuke

FIC SUMMARY: The Wave Mission is a failure. Team Seven is captured. Sasuke is gone. Kakashi is next.
Sakura has no choice but to be a hero.

RECCER'S NOTES: An AU adventure in which Sakura has to grow a backbone several years early and finds, perhaps to her surprise, that it was already there. Sakura's voice is my favourite part of this fic: she sounds genuinely young, scared and rather shellshocked, and so, so determined to survive. Very Nasty Things™ happen which are not dwelt on - trust me when I say this isn't a darkfic, although it has some gloriously creepy imagery. And in among all the stabbity bits is some pretty wicked humour, so all in all there's no good reason not to read this.
dirty_diana: Iris West from CW Flash leaning forward (Iris)

AUTHOR LINK: [archiveofourown.org profile] Rokesmith
RATING/WARNING(S): Teen
WIP?/WORD COUNT: complete / 67 000 words
MAIN CHARACTERS: Barry Allen, Iris West, Caitlin Snow, Cisco Ramon, Joe West

FIC SUMMARY: Three months after the singularity, a wave of impossible robberies strikes Central City, and there is one obvious suspect: the Flash. But as Barry and his friends unite to track down the real culprit, they find themselves facing a dangerous new enemy in a pursuit that may cost them everything.

Post season 1.

RECCER'S NOTES: An epic, plotty imagining of what might have happened after the season one finale. If you spent the summer hoping Iris would finally get to be part of the gang, or wondering what DCU villains might make an appearance, this is the fic to scratch that itch. Plus: friendship and teamwork! So many feels.

AUTHOR LINK: [fanfiction.net profile] Ardwolf
RATING/WARNING(S): Rated M by the author. There's very little that might be objectionable here, IMO, but it really doesn't pull punches when it comes to how creepy and dangerous the Reavers are.
WIP?/WORD COUNT: 39,901, complete
MAIN CHARACTERS: Jean Luc Picard, Mal Reynolds, Q.

FIC SUMMARY: Captain Picard’s bad day just got a lot worse, courtesy of Q. Which is nothing compared to the day Malcolm Reynolds is about to have when River starts babbling about the kindly t’ien lung and his curious bunny rabbit... ST:TNG/Firefly crossover.

RECCER'S NOTES: This is an amazing story. I'm a pretty hard sell when it comes to crossovers between two space-based fandoms, but this works astonishingly well. It's a brilliant exploration of the Reavers, the Firefly universe, the Prime Directive (and the limits thereof), Q, and moral dilemmas. I loved every bit of it. It's mostly a Mal and Picard story (with bonus Q), but nearly all of the characters from both 'verses get a good showing in.

RECCER'S NOTES:

Creepy and realistic, perhaps even more because it's easily imaginable. I could easily see this happening were SGA a darker show.

MAIN CHARACTERS: team, ensemble

FIC SUMMARY: SHIELD's down, Captain America's AWOL, and on the whole, things are kind of FUBAR. On the other hand, Tony might have some semblance of a plan.

RECCER'S NOTES:

This was a great and believable story, about team-building and beginning friendships. The characterization was spot-on for me, and the interactions between the characters build from this.

The plot is paced well, and I like how all the strands come together.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Keladry of Mindelan; ensemble

FIC SUMMARY: After Kel breaks orders and invades Scanra to rescue her Haven civilians in Lady Knight, she is found guilty of treason in wartime.
She escapes with the help of friends and does the only thing Kel could ever conceive of doing in that instance-- she keeps fighting Tortall's war.
This is Kel, however; she is always willing to fight her battles alone, but people will always rise up to fight alongside her.

RECCER'S NOTES:

This is beautiful. I love the use of the language, descriptive and evocative. It captures the characters with few words, but they shine brightly.
Love Keladry here, never givin up. Learning and growing, and just so awesome.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Eleventh Doctor, Amelia Pond, Sarah Jane Smith, River Song.

FIC SUMMARY: The one where the Doctor comes back for little Amelia Pond.

RECCER'S NOTES: Obvious rec is obvious maybe, but how can I not? Because great as Amy Pond is, wee!Amelia is more awesome still, and Eleven is always at his very best with children – and this is the fic surely everyone wanted, where Eleven and Amelia get to travel together. It’s gorgeous, funny, and completely adorable.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Rodney McKay; John Sheppard

FIC SUMMARY: Rodney used to believe that death was the worst thing that could happen on a mission. He was wrong.

RECCER'S NOTES:

This one had me sobbing. I hardly ever cry reading fiction, but this felt very real and grounded. Some time in the future McKay visits a brain injured Sheppard. Dealing with what's left of his friend is hard, and McKay's reaction and his feelings are very believable portrayed. This could happen, and it does happen to soldiers all too often. If you like realistic fanfiction, this is as close as it gets.

AUTHOR LINK: [livejournal.com profile] falseeyelashes
RATING/WARNING(S): R (character death, dark themes, brief sexual content). Spoilers through to the end of season 2 of Lost, no specific West Wing spoilers.
WORD COUNT: 7991
MAIN CHARACTERS: Jed Bartlet, Leo McGarry, Josh Lyman, CJ Cregg, Donna Moss, Toby Ziegler, Sam Seabourne, Jack Shepherd, Kate Austen, Ben Linus, James Ford, Mr Eko, Sayid Jarrah, John Locke… more, probably.

FIC SUMMARY: It took seven days to shape the world. There are seven seals of the apocalypse. And it takes seven, seven events, seven days, seven years, seven, to bring the world to its knees. Planes are meant to crash and nukes are meant to detonate. Men are meant to kill and buildings are meant to fall. Fate is real, fate is a religion and a man not named Henry Gale is its only prophet. He's counting to seven.

RECCER'S NOTES: This fic is very dark and very angsty and very, very well done. The writing style has a hypnotic sort of lilt to it, which feels appropriately dreamlike as the world becomes more and more nightmarish. The descent into darkness and despair is beautifully paced.

It was posted in August 2006, back when the bulk of Lost hadn't yet aired, so it goes 100% AU from the season 2 finale onwards. It also has some background het ships, but they are in absolutely no way a major part the fic.

FIC SUMMARY: Five ways Elsa never learned to control her powers (and one way she did).

RECCER'S NOTES: I love fics that explore alternate ways Elsa could have dealt with her powers, and five things fics are perfectly suited to how I like to see this topic played with. This is a quick and fascinating read, one that I expect to keep coming back to <3

MAIN CHARACTERS: Patrick Kane (genderswapped)

FIC SUMMARY:

When Patricia Kane was 5, she wanted to play in the NHL. When she was 9, she dreamed of playing for USA in the Olympics. By the time she was 11, she was doing her best to forget hockey even existed.

RECCER'S NOTES:

This is a devastating look at Patrick Kane - if he were born a woman. Very devastating, very honest.
