MAIN CHARACTERS: Roy Mustang, Edward Elric

FIC SUMMARY: Stranded in the middle of the Eastern Desert, Roy Mustang must try to get himself and a concussed Edward across it safely before he completely loses his mind.

RECCER'S NOTES: OH GOD THIS FIC. Told from the perspective of an increasingly-unbalanced Roy Mustang, this is a superb story. Though the subject matter is grim, the dialogue is sprinkled with humour - Ed and Roy's acerbic relationship is a joy to read - and it never falls into the trap of navel-gazing that plagues so many fanfics. Mustang is a complex character who's done some truly horrible things, and this story has no qualms in showing that. If it has one flaw it's the proofreading, which left out a number of homophone mistakes, but the rest of the writing is fantastic: vivid and to the point. The story structure keeps the suspense right up till the end.
"Evil, evil thing, to make someone want revenge."

MAIN CHARACTERS: Keladry of Mindelan; ensemble

FIC SUMMARY: After Kel breaks orders and invades Scanra to rescue her Haven civilians in Lady Knight, she is found guilty of treason in wartime.
She escapes with the help of friends and does the only thing Kel could ever conceive of doing in that instance-- she keeps fighting Tortall's war.
This is Kel, however; she is always willing to fight her battles alone, but people will always rise up to fight alongside her.

This is beautiful. I love the use of the language, descriptive and evocative. It captures the characters with few words, but they shine brightly.
Love Keladry here, never givin up. Learning and growing, and just so awesome.

RATING/WARNING(S): Teen | Canon-like horror
WIP?/WORD COUNT: Complete | ~6,500 words
MAIN CHARACTERS: Thomas Nightingale, Peter Grant, Lesley May

FIC SUMMARY: Where ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise.

RECCER'S NOTES: Builds on the fallout from Ettersberg to yield an atmospheric ghost story that feels just like a missing case from canon. There are also interesting insights into Nightingale's youth & the history of magical practice in this universe. Philomytha is always worth reading and it's been a treat watching her fall headlong into a new fandom.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Lee Jordan, Kingsley Shacklebolt

FIC SUMMARY: Lee Jordan has the best idea of his life. Now he just needs someone else to hear him out.

This is how it could have happened. Love the vivid description, and the mix of brightness and darkness. Love Kingsley's view on Lee, and their interaction.

It was not Harry’s heroism, Ron’s desperation, her mother’s love, or her brothers’ toilet seat humor that brought her back (though the toilet seat helped). Ginny breathed deep at night. She wept. She remembered how to rage. She snuck out at night and stole each of her brothers’ brooms in turn. She took to the skies and brought herself back to life.

There are mentions of Harry/Ginny here, but this is undoubtedly a Ginny character fic. It's heartbreaking in its exploration of Tom's possession of her in The Chamber of Secrets. It builds amazing detail in just a few words, and holds Ginny up as the hero of her own story.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Minerva McGonagall

FIC SUMMARY: Sometimes your power’s not in being able to prevent events, but in how you react. - Minerva McGonagall at Hogwarts during the school year Harry misses.

RECCER'S NOTES: This is a wonderful look at Minerva McGonagall, the characterization is spot-on. The mixture of bravery and pragmatism, how she has to carefully navigate difficult waters. Yet she doesn't give up.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Sarah Jane Smith, Romana II

FIC SUMMARY: “If he’d left me on Earth,” Sarah said, “if he’d had time to take me home, like he’d meant to, before he got dragged back here... everything would have been different. My whole life.”

RECCER'S NOTES: Doyle's one of my favourite DW writers; I think this brief conversation piece is one of her best. It centres around the Time War, with a clever, disturbing look at the fallout that will send you back to the start as soon as you've finished the final paragraphs. The characters, all women, leap off the page, and their humour, bravery & pragmatism lighten what might otherwise be a very dark piece. Set on Gallifrey, it's also imbued with a lovely wistful sense of place.

I'm tagging this for author rec as I've never encountered a story of Doyle's that wasn't worth reading, and many of her works are gen. She also writes in the Buffyverse.
