m*a*s*h: Five fics
M*A*S*H leans heavily towards the slashy side, for obvious reasons, but there's some excellent genfic in the fandom too. Here's some of my favourites:

FIC SUMMARY: They're all this crazy because it's the only way to stay sane. The 4077th as seen through the eyes of a terrified new recruit.
RECCER'S NOTES: I read this as a newbie with barely any knowledge of the story; I loved it anyway. The story takes place during the Korean War in a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital where all the personnel, from the army-obsessed surgeon to his fishing-obsessed CO to the crossdressing corporal, are a little bit mad. No further canon knowledge is required.
He hadn't even noticed the gunfire until then. Funny not noticing gunfire. Maybe it was the background music. You never missed the important parts of the picture, because the background music always let you know when the good bits were coming. The music reel was broken today. They should ask for free popcorn. It was only fair.

The news takes him to San Francisco, and with BJ at his side, he goes in search of answers. But instead of the fresh start he dreams of, he and BJ uncover a dark, hidden world and begin to realise that they may have walked away from one war, but a thousand others are raging on.
RECCER'S NOTES: Fair warning: this be not a happy story, but also in no way is it darkfic, and with International Women's Day coming up it's the perfect moment to be talking about this kind of thing. Well-constructed, well-characterized and well-researched, this story hits you like a train. Read to the end - I promise you, you won't regret it.

FIC SUMMARY: Death is expected as part of war, but some mysterious deaths at the 4077th send Margaret and Hawkeye investigating.
RECCER'S NOTES: M.A.S.H. murder mystery. What makes this one stand out are the character voices and attention to speech patterns ("Uh, what does the sir want me to do with this piece of rope before I fall down and throw up , which I warned you about earlier only you didn't listen to me?") There's one very O.O.C moment where Hawkeye picks up a gun and it's never really explained, but setting that aside, it's a very entertaining and lively read.
