Hello, Gensploders! Happy New Year :)

I thought it would be fun to kick off a two week challenge to start the year:

Rec your favourite Yuletide gen fics!

• Fics do not have to be from the most recent Yuletide, nor do they have to be from the main collection (madness treats etc are fine).
• Everyone who posts at least one rec will get a shiny gensplosion participation banner, because why not (the end of this challenge coincides with a week I have off from work so let's keep our fingers crossed my usual banner tardiness does not apply)
• If you wish to participate, all you have to do is post a rec and use the yuletide tag.
• Get your special yuletide recs in prior to the 15th of January GMT.

That's it! Remember, self recs are not allowed, but you're more than welcome to rec fics which were gifted to you.

Hey, gensploders!

We're sorry the comm has been a little slow lately - your mods have been busy IRL and our last Gensploder of the Month rounds have maybe suffered as a result. Don't forget if you want to sign up as Gensploder of the Month it's always at your own pace, and even if you don't get a chance to rec during your assigned month, you won't be punished for it! You can sign up again at any time.

November and December are busy months - lots of holidays, lots of fandom fests and exchanges. Who's taking part in NaNoWriMo? Yuletide? Any other fests/exchanges we should know about?

How about recommending some of your favourite genfics from yuletides gone by? Anything themed for those of you who celebrate Halloween or Thanksgiving? It's still a couple of months away, but your Australian mods are always on the lookout for Christmas fic that doesn't involve snow or hot chocolate!

So this is the first Gensploder of the Month reward post! There are a couple of things to note:

- MOD ERROR. We're extending sincere apologies to

endeni, who was lovely enough to make us a set of smashing banners - and then we realised (realllly late in the game, as we were putting this post together), that we needed things to be a bit smaller in order to fit everything in. We're still willing to accept submissions because not everyone can appreciate the unique beauty of

ozqueen's MS Paint-style banners. (Again, sorry,

endeni! Please feel free to submit something else if you're willing to trust our judgement again. We're happy to get submissions and we're even happy to change banner-y things up from month to month if the community gets a big burst of creative enthusiasm.)

- Also in regards to making things smaller, we've adjusted the bar for bronze awards. To get a bronze award, the character, fandom, or tag has to be used 3-4 times. It used to be 0-4, but we learnt during April that that means we'd need to make a LOT LOT LOT of banners and this post was going to spiral out of control. Honestly though, we're all still figuring out the best way to approach Gensploder of the Month so your feedback on this is more than welcome! <3

Hey hey, gensploders!

To celebrate our little community gaining over 100 subscribers (yay, thank you!) we thought it might be worth offering a challenge for those of you who prefer some structure/deadline/incentive when it comes to posting things.

Starting in April, we're going to begin a "special reccer" program, in which one volunteer per month is challenged to post a certain number of gen fics (for whatever fandoms they want). It doesn't mean nobody else can post, but you'll get a few little bonuses for participating as a special reccer.

At this point we're thinking at least 10 recs for the month in at least 3 different fandoms (but keep an eye on the comments of this post, because it's evolving), and we'll even offer up shiny buttons/banners for each achievement. (And the achievements are open to suggestion.) We're not expecting it to be too full-on, because we're still a pretty small community and we're not completely flooded with recs yet, but this might be something fun, and it'll offer a little more structure if you're better off aiming for something specific, like a certain amount of recs in a certain amount of time.

We've got a nifty poll for you to fill out to display your interest. Filling out the poll is not a commitment, it's just there to sound out how many people might be interested.

Thank you all for joining our little corner of the internet! We've grown slowly but steadily since starting up, and it looks like we've got recs in a nice variety of fandoms so far!

BUT - we'd love a few more! And with the holiday fandom exchanges (mostly) wrapped up, consider this inspiration to post those amazing gen fics you were gifted! Were you browsing the yuletide tags, only to stumble upon an amazing BROTP fic? Were you gifted the perfect family fic? Have you got a wonderful action/adventure rec up your sleeve?

We're going to put an affiliates post up in a day or so, so get ready for that. In the mean time, though, we thought it'd be handy to have a standard post for fic requests.

If you're looking for gen fic from a certain fandom, or featuring certain characters, you can request it here. We'll add the link to this post into the sidebar, but it'll work best if you track it so you can keep up with each comment as it comes in!

So name your fandom - and, if you want, the characters you really want to see - and we'll see if other gensploders can help you out. ♥

If you're filling somebody's request, we wholeheartedly recommend you post it to the community instead of as a comment here - that way it can be tagged, and anyone else wanting something similar will be able to find it. :)

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY GEN?

We mean a story of any length or genre, in which the focus is not on a romantic or sexual relationship. Fics may acknowledge romance/relationships/sex, but these things should not - at all - be the focus of the story.

Instead, we request that you rec fics that focus more on family, friendship, plot, character exploration, adventure, whatever! So long as the primary focus is not a romantic or sexual relationship, you're good! If you have any questions, ask!

I'M NOT SURE IF MY REC IS GEN...

Gen can be a bit blurred with other genres sometimes. We get it! If the fic you want to rec really is open to interpretation, we won't stop you recommending it. But we ask that you think very carefully about it. There are plenty of places to recommend and find shippy fic. This is not one of them, so please think carefully about each rec and, if you're in doubt, perhaps hold off for a bit and try to find something more fitting to the genre we're really looking for.

HOW MANY RECS CAN I POST?

As many as you want! But please don't take to spamming our flists! If you want to put your recs in separate posts, that's fine, but please limit it to two recs per day. If you're going to combine your recs into one post, we'll allow two recs outside of a cut - but the rest should go beneath. (If you're not sure how to create a cut, the dreamwidth FAQ has a great guide.)

WHAT'S UP WITH THE TAGS?

We're pretty informal around here! Just tag your post with - fandom name, and then you can add a few fun/squeeful/whatever tags to go with it! If the tag you want to add can apply to more than one fandom, that's great! But don't worry if it doesn't. If your fandom has pet nicknames for brOTPs, families, or friendships, use them! If the fic you're reccing has a list of tropes, tag them! The only mandatory tag is the fandom tag, and even if you miss that, one of the mods will add it for you. (We'll also merge any similar tags, purely for searching purposes - similar tags just split the searching into too many little threads. But if you've noticed one of your tags has disappeared and you really want to keep it, just say so!) The point is, don't stress about the tags! Feel free to have a bit of fun with them.

That said, however, one tag does have a restriction on it, and that is the 'gensploder' tag. This tag needs to be earned through the GENSPLODER OF THE MONTH challenge before you get one of your own.
