MAIN CHARACTERS: Steve Rogers, Phil Coulson, Tony Stark

FIC SUMMARY: "Those were near mint, sir," Coulson says when he finds out that Fury dipped his vintage Captain America trading cards in his cooling lifeblood before tossing them, careless and callous, on the table in front of Steve and Tony.

RECCER'S NOTES:

I have been in utter misery lately because I broke a tooth and I need a root canal and ugh I've been in so much pain and just wanting allllll the fandom comforts. This fic fits the bill perfectly - it's sweet and comes with a perfect blend of sadness and fluff. Steve is adorable and kind, Tony pops in and is just so totally TONY, and the end managed to put a smile on my face even when smiling was physically painful. Go read! ♥

FIC SUMMARY: Sometimes 'daddy's girl' isn't a description so much as a warning label.

RECCER'S NOTES: [personal profile] ozqueen just requested some competency!fics over at the requests post and this ficlet immediately jumped to my mind. In fact, despite being a pretty short story, it's a perfect fit, wonderfully showing Betty being her awesome & competent self (with a little help from her friends). Just delicious. ;)

MAIN CHARACTERS: Clint Barton, Maria Hill, cameos of the other chracters

FIC SUMMARY: ...What about Barton?”
“He knows what to say to the shrinks.”
“Hill, we all know what to say to the shrinks at this point.” Fury rubbed one hand over the top of his head.

RECCER'S NOTES: I like the chracterization not only of Maria, who is brilliant here, but also of Clint. His recovery after the events of the movie gets treated with respect and care. I like the balance between drama and sweetness.

The fact that this exists makes me so happy! It's a fun, quick read, with great humour and character dynamics.

JARVIS

FIC SUMMARY: Tony has opinions about the non-life-affirming qualities of packaged ramen on any but the grad-school population. Bruce really wishes he would piss off with his opinions, but finds himself struck with the urge to cook.

RECCER'S NOTES: This story has been the treat of my day. It's a brilliant little character study in which Bruce learns to cook and takes care of his teammates at the same time. There's not too much in the way of plot, but the character moments are sublime. It has my favorite type of Bruce characterization: tough, sarcastic, and prickly, with a tread of sadness running through him (BBY! *sniff*) but with underlying gentleness and a heart of gold.

FIC SUMMARY: In which Natasha discovers that Hallmark does not in fact make a greeting card for every occasion.

A clever little fic which raises a lot of wonderful and worrying things about Natasha's character in an amusing way. I love the idea of the greeting cards, and her motivation for buying them.

RATING/WARNING(S): There are warnings and other content notes in the tags on AO3 and the headers on DW. The entire series is rated G but contains occasional possibly-disturbing material of a nonsexual nature that doesn't usually have to do with violence or other standard warnings.
WIP?/WORD COUNT: Nine completed works, one WiP (apparently completed and being updated three times per week). The completed works together total over 156,000 words.
MAIN CHARACTERS: Phil Coulson, Tony Stark, Clint Barton, Natasha Romanova, Bruce Banner, and Steve Rogers at first. Later on, Betty Ross, Hulk and Bucky Barnes.

FIC SUMMARY: The Avengers pretend to be kids and play kiddie games as a way to learn to trust each other and work through their super-sized (pun intended) baggage. Later on, they also take care of each other in other ways. It's very much a series about fixing things.

RECCER'S NOTES: The characters cry a bit more than I find plausible, but no, no one's utterly woobified. Certainly they're more IC than the premise would seem to suggest, and no, no one lisps. At most, there's the very occasional "'kay" instead of "okay". The strengths of this series are in showcasing care, how needs are met, and how to deal with problems constructively. The series's main theme is probably psychological healing. It probably sounds like it's not your thing. Try it anyway. Read the first fic, Love Is For Children, and see if the rest of the series appeals to you. My personal favorite is Splash. Birthday Girl is the one where Natasha Romanova has a birthday party, and there's so much buildup that it's actually plausible. Also, Fury is a dick in this fic. Note that Guys and Dolls does contain minimal mostly-implied romance (nothing that actually happens on-screen couldn't be platonic, though). Heads-up that Hide and Seek is very YMMV in terms of quality, and Eggshells might hit some squicks even if you like the rest of the series.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Steve Rogers, James "Bucky" Barnes, Tony Stark, Bruce Banner, Thor, Natasha Romanova, Clint Barton

FIC SUMMARY: The serum's given Steve a lot, but it hasn't taken anything away from him. Not even the things he never wanted in the first place.

RECCER'S NOTES:

I can't explain why, but for some reason, the idea of Steve not being 100% cured of all his ailments after the serum is one I really like. This fic is fantastic - some lovely hurt/comfort, great humour, and fantastic team dynamics. Steve's voice is wonderful, and Tony is definitely a star here too.

When Steve comes round, the first thing he realises is that he isn't dead. The second is that the bone-deep cold he'd felt before is now just a slight chill in his extremities, and his breath is moving easily in and out of his lungs, although his throat feels a little sore. For a second, he's reminded of waking up in a fake recovery room in New York, the same disorientation, the same sense memory of having recently been so cold.

Then he opens his eyes to find Stark glaring at him from way too close.

“You know that was a dick move, right?” says Stark. “Do you know how many extra bodyguards I would've had to hire before telling Fury I killed Captain America? I'm not talking for, like, a day, either. That guy plays the long game.”

MAIN CHARACTERS: Steve Rogers, Natasha Romanov, Tony Stark, Clint Barton, Bruce Banner, Nick Fury

FIC SUMMARY: After the Battle of New York is over, and Loki and the tesseract are returned to Asgard, Steve takes a road trip across the country, and tries to figure out what he wants to do next.

RECCER'S NOTES:

This fic grabs hold of the shot at the end of the Avengers movie, with Steve on his motorcycle, and balloons it into a brilliant fic with Steve catching up on everything he's missed and taking some time out for himself, trying to figure out what his purpose should be.

There is just so much good here - Steve discovering food, and music, and places. It's a happy fic with underlying currents of angst (because you can't have a Steve Rogers fic without a bit of angst, right?) and his purpose and his aimlessness just mix wonderfully. It's really, really well done, and it leaves me with the warm and fuzzies and a great feeling of satisfaction.

There is also some fantastic fan art by [livejournal.com profile] _afterism scattered throughout.

RECCER'S NOTES:

*hands* I know, I know - another Marvel rec from me. I promise I will try to mix it up a bit, but I've been on an Avengers kick lately, and I just want to read all the fic.
This one is fantastic - featuring Maria Hill and Natasha Romanov, all their badassery BAMFness, and the complicated relationship they have. Fantastic voices, great grip of character, and an epic road trip.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Natalia Romanova, Clint Barton, Phil Coulson

FIC SUMMARY: Clint Barton's snap decision to re-interpret his mission orders means a new life for Natalia Romanova. She's only got the one shot at it, though, and "how to live and remake yourself in three easy steps" was never included in her assassin training.

RECCER'S NOTES:

OH ♥ OH MY.

This is, hands down, one of the best things I have ever read. Ever. The characterisation is mind blowing. The plot is fantastic as well - fast-paced and full of excellent action-y S.H.I.E.L.D. missions. Coulson, when he appears (which is frequently, yay!) is perfect, but this is a fic about Natasha and Clint. How they build and rebuild themselves as people, as spies, as assassins, as colleagues. This is a long fic, but I drank in every word of it. There is a sequel coming, but so far, this is the only segment which has been posted.

A really fun fic, which perfectly demonstrates the whole "found family" feeling of these characters. There are background pairings (Clint/Phil and Tony/Pepper), but this fic is primarily about Steve and how he fits into life in the 21st century. This fic has a really unique way of approaching this trope, and the whole thing is really sweet and funny.

RECCER'S NOTES:

This is hilarious and awesome. I just love it, I can't even. The voices are amazing, and there are heaps of little nods, quotes, quips and homages to other fandoms throughout, including Firefly and Doctor Who. There's also a podfic by [archiveofourown.org profile] susan_voight.
