RATING/WARNING(S): T; warnings for torture and slavery
WIP?/WORD COUNT: No, 47,977
MAIN CHARACTERS: Kirk, McCoy, Spock

FIC SUMMARY: A routine mission goes bad when Kirk, Spock, and McCoy find themselves crashed on a remote planet, injured, and hidden from the Enterprise. To make matters worse, the planet's inhabitants appreciate neither Starfleet nor unexpected visitors.

RECCER'S NOTES: I'll be honest, the level of torture and general unpleasantness in this story is right at the edge of what I can tolerate. (My tolerance level is on the low side, however. YMMV.) That said, I stuck with this story because it's just so good. Really engaging, lots of great friendship moments, awesome Kirk, awesome everyone. This is very much a triumvirate story, but the other characters all get some good moments too. An engaging adventure and survival tale that's worth a look.

RATING/WARNING(S): G
WIP?/WORD COUNT: Complete | 11,000
MAIN CHARACTERS: Spock, James T. Kirk, Christine Chapel, Leonard McCoy

FIC SUMMARY: "A joyless smile, a shuttered look, a turn of shoulders. Is this how friendship ends?" Set after "The City on the Edge of Forever". Spock fears the worst.

RECCER'S NOTES: Second-person narrative is a rare choice for fanfic and, for that matter, also for profic, but oh how this story makes it work. It does a great job of portraying the careful balance of reason and feeling in Spock's mind, and the disconnect between "what you think" and "what you end up saying" was painfully familiar. Also: Christine Chapel is awesome.

(There is a leeetle bit of non-gen-ness in the interaction between Spock and Chapel, but it holds close to what we see in canon.)

WIP?/WORD COUNT: 2,283 words, complete
MAIN CHARACTERS: Valeris

FIC SUMMARY: Every good villain is the hero of her own story. On trial for the assassination of Chancellor Gorkon, Lieutenant Valeris tells hers.

RECCER'S NOTES: I have never before seen a story from the POV of Valeris. Set after the events of The Undiscovered Country, this is an interesting exploration of her motivations and her thoughts after the fallout of the movie.

WIP?/WORD COUNT: complete / 158 700 words
MAIN CHARACTERS: Leonard McCoy, Spock, James T Kirk, OCs

FIC SUMMARY: McCoy's transport is destroyed in what is thought to be an accidental containment field explosion. No major character deaths.

RECCER'S NOTES: I try to always be honest about who a rec is meant for, so I will admit that if you feel like there is never a reason for a story to be over 100 000 words? This is not the fic that is going to change your mind. If, on the other hand, you love a good rollicking space adventure? Vulcans, Romulans, intergalactic politics, daring escapes, and the crew of the Enterprise being good at what they're good at? Then this is the fic for you. Fascinating examination of some of the Big Themes that come with Roddenberry's take on space exploration, and lovely characterisation of the classic triumvirate.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Spock, Pike, Number One, OCs

FIC SUMMARY: The events taking place during Spock’s final year at Starfleet Academy continue to shape him into the person and officer he will become. A tale about friendship and adventure.

RECCER'S NOTES: A tale of Spock's first, dangerous trip on the Enterprise with mentor-to-be Captain Pike. Plotty character explorations are always great. However it is easy for an author who loves a character (as we all do) to fall into the trap of only exploring the positives, or of doing a little fannish revisionist history. This story of what Spock's Academy days might have looked like never loses sight of the fact that Spock of Vulcan, later saviour of the known world, could also be a bit of a rebellious brat.
