MAIN CHARACTERS: Qui-Gon Jinn, Yoda, Dooku

FIC SUMMARY: Two stories focusing on Qui-Gon Jinn as a young padawan, never quite able to fit in. In the first, Qui-Gon asks to be sent home to figure out where he belongs. In the second, Dooku enters the game and Yoda meddles.
Best read together.

RECCER'S NOTES: I rarely read "character as a Youth" stories, since the child protagonists are too often depicted as smaller, blander versions of their adult selves, but this story proves me wrong. Qui-Gon is remarkably well-written: he feels like a real person (who happens to be a child) and the essence of his character shines through every thought and action, in his choices and the way he reacts to events. He is himself, forty-odd years earlier, fundamentally different but lacking nothing. Dooku, too, is not-himself yet himself. There's no hidden seed of darkness: the darkness is right there in the open, yet he's a Jedi and a firmly moral person, albeit one whose morals do not necessarily agree with yours.

Excellent characterisation which does justice to all three main characters, some very sharp criticism/examination of the Jedi Order and finally, a stonking good adventure story. (Also a very satisfying answer to the question of who the hell was Qui-Gon's master: both, of course.) I love it, I love it, I love it.

Eight hundred years of Jedi experience, Yoda thought, and he was not prepared for this. So many Masters and Padawans, taking the same routes, making the same responses to the same problems, and after a while you no longer saw the faces. Only the process, only the Order itself in its monumental evolving beauty.

How had this boy happened now? A thousand years ago there had been Jedi like this - obeying the Force in their own way, and obeying nothing else. Strange, wild, uncomfortable beings, untameable, splendid, chaotic. A thousand years ago they had been needed, to fight the Sith. But the Sith were dead, and what the galaxy required now was Jedi who could bring order, and exist in order.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Spock, James T. Kirk, Christine Chapel, Leonard McCoy

FIC SUMMARY: "A joyless smile, a shuttered look, a turn of shoulders. Is this how friendship ends?" Set after "The City on the Edge of Forever". Spock fears the worst.

RECCER'S NOTES: Second-person narrative is a rare choice for fanfic and, for that matter, also for profic, but oh how this story makes it work. It does a great job of portraying the careful balance of reason and feeling in Spock's mind, and the disconnect between "what you think" and "what you end up saying" was painfully familiar. Also: Christine Chapel is awesome.

(There is a leeetle bit of non-gen-ness in the interaction between Spock and Chapel, but it holds close to what we see in canon.)

MAIN CHARACTERS: Natsume Takashi, Fujiwara Touko, Fujiwara Shigeru

FIC SUMMARY: The more Touko hears about Natsume Takashi, the more confused she becomes. The stories she hears are of a selfish child acting out for attention, or worse, but all she can see is a sad, lost child in need of a place to put down roots so that he can settle his mind.

RECCER'S NOTES: This is such a wonderful characer study of bot Touko and of Natsume as we see him through her eyes. I love the way the story flows, and how Touka sees more than the others do. There's such a gentleness and kindness to her that makes me love her just the more.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Lily Luna Potter, Ron Weasley

FIC SUMMARY: Teaching Lily chess started as a way to keep her occupied and out of everyone’s hair. It grew into much more than that.

RECCER'S NOTES: This is a great look at the familial relationship between Ron and Lily Luna. Love how Ron is so Ron, but grown-up. Love how we see Lily Luna through his eyes. It's great to see her growing, and I'm glad she has Ron to mentor her.

RECCER'S NOTES: This is such a great little character study. Moreoften than not Gwendoline has my sympathies even though she was horrid sometimes. And while she is still herself here she does grow up.

FIC SUMMARY: Three months after the singularity, a wave of impossible robberies strikes Central City, and there is one obvious suspect: the Flash. But as Barry and his friends unite to track down the real culprit, they find themselves facing a dangerous new enemy in a pursuit that may cost them everything.

Post season 1.

RECCER'S NOTES: An epic, plotty imagining of what might have happened after the season one finale. If you spent the summer hoping Iris would finally get to be part of the gang, or wondering what DCU villains might make an appearance, this is the fic to scratch that itch. Plus: friendship and teamwork! So many feels.

FIC SUMMARY: SHIELD's down, Captain America's AWOL, and on the whole, things are kind of FUBAR. On the other hand, Tony might have some semblance of a plan.

RECCER'S NOTES:

This was a great and believable story, about team-building and beginning friendships. The characterization was spot-on for me, and the interactions between the characters build from this.

The plot is paced well, and I like how all the strands come together.
