dirty_diana, who was our gensploder for February 2016. You've been so patient in the face of my ridiculous incompetence.

I was the gensploder for March and I just did not have time to get as many recs out as I wanted. Work has been grossly unfair to me lately and free time is super rare.

But anyway! I finally found a few minutes to get at least one post together. For future gensploders, I think I should be a bit better at this in future -- I have some time off coming up so hopefully I'll be able to organise myself a bit! :D

RECCER'S NOTES: I'm a sucker for stories about fame in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and this is a great one as both the public and Steve wrestle with the return of Captain America. As well as the fact that his backstory is, well, kind of unbelievable.

RECCER'S NOTES: The novel The Goblin Emperor is full of intricate world-building and intriguing minor characters. This story makes interesting stars of Idra and Paru, while still dealing wirh some of the fallout that events in the novel may have caused.

RECCER'S NOTES: Elementary has made a recurring theme of Sherlock's fun, odd habits. One of which is the tendency to bring home random animals, including fandom favourite Clyde the tortoise. This fic does a great job of recreating the really, Sherlock? comedy the show is built around, as well the unique type of friendship that Sherlock inspires.

I'm so sorry this has taken me so long! I would have done it last weekend but I had a really nasty head cold and my brain was goo, and we had two very enthusaistic reccers for April, so this one took me a while!

FIC SUMMARY:

There were many rumours about the Black Widow, some of which might even have been true. The most reliable of these were presented to Clint in maybe the sketchiest mission briefing he'd ever received, full of words like 'allegedly' and 'probably' and 'although it seems unlikely' which seemed out of place in a SHIELD file. There was only one piece of information that truly surprised him.

"We seriously don't know what her dæmon is, sir?" he asked Coulson.

RECCER'S NOTES: This is definitely my favourite His Dark Materials AU, for how perfectly the daemons are integrated in both characterisation and plot. The author takes advantage of Pullman's worldbuilding to create a believable allegory of normality and disability - but underneath all that is a lovely tale of Natasha, Clint, and how they became friends.

RECCER'S NOTES: Lovely Natasha backstory, a beautiful sketch of how she fought to make herself, and the believable could-have-beens of her origins with SHIELD.

“Clint Barton,” he replied, perfunctorily shaking hands with LeClair. Natasha wondered if he always used Clint. She doubted Barton was his last name, but perhaps it was. The American had done nothing as he was supposed to; it was unexpected and refreshing. She rather hoped he would not be the next on her list, but if he kept turning up like this, the Red Room was bound to notice. The Red Room noticed everything.

Moreover, the local mafia are about to enact a plan that could put the entire region at risk. With Hydra hot on his heels, Clint must rely on his wits and a few local friends to put an end to the plot and get out alive.

RECCER'S NOTES: Wondering what Clint was up to during Captain America: The Winter Soldier? This story shows us a plausible, action-packed explanation. Thematically inspired by the Fraction/Aja comic in an interesting way, as the daunting situations of the MCU meet an extremely human Clint. Contains one of my favourite MCU specific tropes, Deaf/Hard of Hearing Clint. Who we should get more of in canon, anyway.

RECCER'S NOTES: The background is touching Bucky & Steve hurt/comfort, but the foreground is an excellent and non-buffoonish Thor pov - something that is way too rare. Thor observes, and understands more than people expect him to.

What the Avengers call "friends" Thor was reared to call "family". It is a different word for the same thing, and Thor does not need anyone to explain. He decides, as he thinks about it, that he will do for the Captain what he would do for any of of his family, what they have already done for him.

RECCER'S NOTES: Adorable snapshot of Our Heroes on the front lines, tangling it up with the Germans over a cow. As you do. Reminds me a bit of Brubaker-era flashback scenes in the way that it balances the Captain America and Howling Commando mythos with the fact that they're really just dudes doing a job. As well as the fact that war is terrible and ridiculous, sometimes simultaneously.

Not actually a Christmas story, if that's the kind of thing you like to know.

RECCER'S NOTES: Faiza first appeared in the short-lived Captain Britain and MI:13, where the lifelong superhero fangirl turned into an Excablibur-wielding magic user. Working alongside some of her favs Faiza never lost that adorable giddyness, and this is a could-be-canon look at how she got there.

Faiza knows who she is, of course, everyone does. "No thank you, Captain Britain," she says, pleased with how grown up she sounds, even if her voice is high and shaking a little. "I can get back by myself."

Captain Britain's lips purse, and she hovers a little closer. "Are you sure?" she asks. "I can fly you right back to the window. Wouldn't you like to fly?"

RECCER'S NOTES: I try to always be honest about who a rec is meant for, so I will admit that if you feel like there is never a reason for a story to be over 100 000 words? This is not the fic that is going to change your mind. If, on the other hand, you love a good rollicking space adventure? Vulcans, Romulans, intergalactic politics, daring escapes, and the crew of the Enterprise being good at what they're good at? Then this is the fic for you. Fascinating examination of some of the Big Themes that come with Roddenberry's take on space exploration, and lovely characterisation of the classic triumvirate.

RECCER'S NOTES: A minor AU taking place after The First Avenger and Avengers, in which Steve struugles with the 21st century, but not for the reasons people expect. Thoughtful exploration of Steve's wartime traumas and how he might fit, or not, with the rest of his motley team. And a great incorporation of Sam as he tries to be a friend for another lost soldier who's come home.

He understands the importance of symbols, understands the importance of Captain America, but he hadn’t thought he’d have to be Captain America to SHIELD or to his teammates. It’s exhausting to have to be on all the time, and he’s not sure how long he can keep it up for.

RECCER'S NOTES: A tale of Spock's first, dangerous trip on the Enterprise with mentor-to-be Captain Pike. Plotty character explorations are always great. However it is easy for an author who loves a character (as we all do) to fall into the trap of only exploring the positives, or of doing a little fannish revisionist history. This story of what Spock's Academy days might have looked like never loses sight of the fact that Spock of Vulcan, later saviour of the known world, could also be a bit of a rebellious brat.
