RECCER'S NOTES: I love the historical style of this, how a historian looks back on the start of the fourth age. Reading The Lord of the Rings everything feels immediate, but I often wonder how it would look like centuries later.
I love how Merry and Éomer's friendship shines through in their letters. I love the glimpses we see of them.

RECCER'S NOTES: What if the Fifth Doctor was roped into the Time War? It's a fascinating premise. Fobwatched!Five is a plausible and sympathetic extrapolation: he's still the Doctor, even with one foot in the classic era and one in the new. The murder mystery is a little draggy, but I really came to care for "Dr. John Foreman," his wife, his father-in-law, and the life he's carved out for himself. His nightmares of the Time War are compelling and terrifying; it's worth a read just for them. I found myself wishing he'd never remember who he really was.

RECCER'S NOTES: A minor AU taking place after The First Avenger and Avengers, in which Steve struugles with the 21st century, but not for the reasons people expect. Thoughtful exploration of Steve's wartime traumas and how he might fit, or not, with the rest of his motley team. And a great incorporation of Sam as he tries to be a friend for another lost soldier who's come home.

He understands the importance of symbols, understands the importance of Captain America, but he hadn’t thought he’d have to be Captain America to SHIELD or to his teammates. It’s exhausting to have to be on all the time, and he’s not sure how long he can keep it up for.

I love the plot, and how it unfolded. Both plot and characterization work together and are interwoven. I love how wizarding Britain is depicted, and how Dudley fits himself into it. I love watching him grow and make himself a new life.

I love his view on what happened and happens. We see the adult characters (Harry, Ginny, Ron...) through his eyes, and while James is the central character we learn a lot about the others too.

RECCER'S NOTES: This is a really great case!fic and character study. The mystery was well thought out and the case engaging. I loved all the little details, how they make the characters and their world rich and real. Ron's struggle felt very true to canon, at the same time we can see him growing up.

Eee, this is amazing! Luna tries to deal with her own personal fallout after the war, including having to adjust to the knowledge that her father tried to turn Harry over to the Death Eaters.
Her relationship with Snape is perfect - he's all hard edges, scorn and resistance, and Luna is determination, curiosity and kindness. Really lovely fic, and adding an 'author rec' tag because I would recommend just about everything on this author's page - gen and shippy fic.

RECCER'S NOTES: Wimsey and Jeeves & Wooster are both set among the upper classes during the interwar years, but the Wimsey world is shaped by the First World War, while J&W's world notoriously ignores it. In crossing over the universes, Adina comes up with an ingenious solution for this absence that doesn't negate Wodehouse's choice. To say more would be to spoil it.

This vignette stands independently but is in the same universe as her better-known 'Green Ice'.

RECCER'S NOTES: Beyond using portraits as characters, magical art is poorly developed in canon and rarely explored in fanfiction. In this thoughtful & atmospheric one off, Ignipes invents the field of magical sculpture, barely mentioned in canon, via the works of a sculptor who survived the Grindelwald war. But it's so much more than that: the piece folds in wizarding prejudices and the after effects of war on the survivors. A beautifully characterised Hermione on a post-war ~~road~~rail trip through Italy makes the perfect narrator.

RECCER'S NOTES:

This fic takes place immediately after/during Nine's regeneration. The Dashwood sisters happen upon him, a broken man after the Time War, and it's just - wow.

The characterisation is flawless and I'm definitely adopting this as my head canon. I would say you'll still be able to heartily enjoy this even if you're not familiar with both canons.

The Doctor sat at the pianoforte's keyboard, bashing out the tune with undisguised glee. Sir John clapped in time, a broad grin upon his face, as Mrs. Jennings and Margaret danced as best they could with only one another for partners. Even Mrs. Dashwood nodded her head and smiled broadly, and when the Doctor finished with a flourish, all applauded.

"What a jaunty tune!" exclaimed Mrs. Jennings. "I swear, I never heard its like. So thrilling! Quite the thing for dancing. Tell us, what is it called?"

"Blue Suede Shoes." The Doctor closed the pianoforte lid with apparent regret. "Hasn't quite caught on in London yet, but give it time."
