"Bucky... is... alive."

And then JARVIS has some interesting footage for him and Tony to see, and Steve soon finds himself doing something he never could have imagined; diving deep undercover in Hydra.

RECCER'S NOTES: A fix-it fic in which Steve and Tony become and stay friends, Bucky lands in a safe space, Hydra goes down hard, and everyone gets some much-needed therapy. all thanks to the canon Avenger's time travel snafu creating an alternate (and IMO much better) universe. This is a long one that you can settle into. There's action plot, and a whole lot of hurt/comfort involving Bucky rediscovering who he is. It's also the first in a series, so if you like it you can move right along into the next story.

FIC SUMMARY: Two stories focusing on Qui-Gon Jinn as a young padawan, never quite able to fit in. In the first, Qui-Gon asks to be sent home to figure out where he belongs. In the second, Dooku enters the game and Yoda meddles.
Best read together.

RECCER'S NOTES: I rarely read "character as a Youth" stories, since the child protagonists are too often depicted as smaller, blander versions of their adult selves, but this story proves me wrong. Qui-Gon is remarkably well-written: he feels like a real person (who happens to be a child) and the essence of his character shines through every thought and action, in his choices and the way he reacts to events. He is himself, forty-odd years earlier, fundamentally different but lacking nothing. Dooku, too, is not-himself yet himself. There's no hidden seed of darkness: the darkness is right there in the open, yet he's a Jedi and a firmly moral person, albeit one whose morals do not necessarily agree with yours.

Excellent characterisation which does justice to all three main characters, some very sharp criticism/examination of the Jedi Order and finally, a stonking good adventure story. (Also a very satisfying answer to the question of who the hell was Qui-Gon's master: both, of course.) I love it, I love it, I love it.

Eight hundred years of Jedi experience, Yoda thought, and he was not prepared for this. So many Masters and Padawans, taking the same routes, making the same responses to the same problems, and after a while you no longer saw the faces. Only the process, only the Order itself in its monumental evolving beauty.

How had this boy happened now? A thousand years ago there had been Jedi like this - obeying the Force in their own way, and obeying nothing else. Strange, wild, uncomfortable beings, untameable, splendid, chaotic. A thousand years ago they had been needed, to fight the Sith. But the Sith were dead, and what the galaxy required now was Jedi who could bring order, and exist in order.

RECCER'S NOTES: One of my favourite genres of RD fanfiction is the one that addresses the Rimmer-as-Ace issue, because it seems sad somehow that our Rimmer, the neurotic arsewipe we know and love, could simply be subsumed into Generic Space Hero #1598719 (what a guy!) with no trace of the original remaining; and over the years there's been many stories written with different versions of What Happened Next. This one, as the title implies, aims to unite the two personas; its depiction of Rimmer's struggle with / acceptance of the role is excellent, it has a good ear for character voice and the plot moves at a good lick. But beyond all that, it's just... fun. To be read slowly - take a break between chapter and chapter, savour the twists in the road. If you've not read it before you're in for a treat, and if you have you're in for another, because it's just updated and the end is in sight. Go!

RECCER'S NOTES: I really like the relationship between Ron and Sirius here. They bond here over feeling kind of useless. And I love that the story shows that they aren't.
Love Sirius' characterization especially here. I think the author really captures book 5 Sirius.

RECCER'S NOTES: Loki and Thor are both very well written - Loki a genuinely twisty bitter bastard, albeit one who loves his mum, and Thor rather more intelligent than many people give him credit for, especially when it comes to his brother. The worlds they pass through are sometimes harmless, often horrifying, and always weird. Hopping across worlds like stepping stones on the way to Hel, and there is, as always in these stories, a catch...

Fittingly enough the dub just hit Episode 31, so this fic is now safe for everyone in the English-speaking fandom. A beautiful, vivid little oneshot about two people who might actually get along, and also all the feels. ALL OF THEM. After reading this I found myself desperately craving more Annie-Levi fic which of course does not exist. Dammit.

RECCER'S NOTES: An AU adventure in which Sakura has to grow a backbone several years early and finds, perhaps to her surprise, that it was already there. Sakura's voice is my favourite part of this fic: she sounds genuinely young, scared and rather shellshocked, and so, so determined to survive. Very Nasty Things™ happen which are not dwelt on - trust me when I say this isn't a darkfic, although it has some gloriously creepy imagery. And in among all the stabbity bits is some pretty wicked humour, so all in all there's no good reason not to read this.

Plus: friendship and teamwork! So many feels.

This was a great and believable story, about team-building and beginning friendships. The characterization was spot-on for me, and the interactions between the characters build from this.

The plot is paced well, and I like how all the strands come together.

I lost interest in Supernatural a while back, but recent discussion made me re-read a few of my old favorites. This story certainly passes the test of time.

I love the atmosphere of this story. And the plot and its resolution, which was stunning and completely logical. And I love this Sam here and his relationship to his brother. Brilliant.

RECCER'S NOTES: As I’ve said, I have a weakness for Doctor Who historicals, and this is one of the very best. The author is amazing (consider this also an author rec: JJ is an incredible fanfic writer and pretty much never puts out a duff fic) and also has a clear love of history, which shines through. It’s an all-out action-adventure piece at novel length, although that’s not to say there’s not some great characterisation, with the TARDIS team being split up (as ever) but into two lesser-explored combinations, which allows for some lovely development between the still-new group, as Polly and the Doctor have to work together while Ben and Jamie find themselves in some surprising situations, not always easy for a 20th century English seaman and an 18th C Scottish Jacobite.

(There’s a tiny bit of canon-typical Ben/Polly at the end, and a little bit of slightly more unexpected Ben/Jamie along the way because of plot, but nothing to render it non-gen.)

Anyway, it’s long, fabulous, enthralling, and novel-style (and length) enough to be read on its own strengths if you’re not all that familiar with this TARDIS team (who have after all been especially unfairly hit by burnination).

This is Kel, however; she is always willing to fight her battles alone, but people will always rise up to fight alongside her.

RECCER'S NOTES:

This is beautiful. I love the use of the language, descriptive and evocative. It captures the characters with few words, but they shine brightly.
Love Keladry here, never givin up. Learning and growing, and just so awesome.

There were many rumours about the Black Widow, some of which might even have been true. The most reliable of these were presented to Clint in maybe the sketchiest mission briefing he'd ever received, full of words like 'allegedly' and 'probably' and 'although it seems unlikely' which seemed out of place in a SHIELD file. There was only one piece of information that truly surprised him.

"We seriously don't know what her dæmon is, sir?" he asked Coulson.

RECCER'S NOTES: This is definitely my favourite His Dark Materials AU, for how perfectly the daemons are integrated in both characterisation and plot. The author takes advantage of Pullman's worldbuilding to create a believable allegory of normality and disability - but underneath all that is a lovely tale of Natasha, Clint, and how they became friends.

There are two complete stories posted so far. You could read only one or the other, but it works better together. While there could be more, each story has an clear ending.

The first one depicts Bucky's reclamtion of himself from the Winter Soldier. I love how this is depicted, how it wars inside of him. Love also the humor that is spread throughout the story. It's hard work for him, so the humor is very much appreciated. He has some help though, the OCs are great!

The second story deals with Bucky's integration into the team. I love how he learns to connect with each of them, each in their own way.

“Clint Barton,” he replied, perfunctorily shaking hands with LeClair. Natasha wondered if he always used Clint. She doubted Barton was his last name, but perhaps it was. The American had done nothing as he was supposed to; it was unexpected and refreshing. She rather hoped he would not be the next on her list, but if he kept turning up like this, the Red Room was bound to notice. The Red Room noticed everything.

With Hydra hot on his heels, Clint must rely on his wits and a few local friends to put an end to the plot and get out alive.

RECCER'S NOTES: Wondering what Clint was up to during Captain America: The Winter Soldier? This story shows us a plausible, action-packed explanation. Thematically inspired by the Fraction/Aja comic in an interesting way, as the daunting situations of the MCU meet an extremely human Clint. Contains one of my favourite MCU specific tropes, Deaf/Hard of Hearing Clint. Who we should get more of in canon, anyway.

RECCER'S NOTES: I try to always be honest about who a rec is meant for, so I will admit that if you feel like there is never a reason for a story to be over 100 000 words? This is not the fic that is going to change your mind. If, on the other hand, you love a good rollicking space adventure? Vulcans, Romulans, intergalactic politics, daring escapes, and the crew of the Enterprise being good at what they're good at? Then this is the fic for you. Fascinating examination of some of the Big Themes that come with Roddenberry's take on space exploration, and lovely characterisation of the classic triumvirate.

I love the plot, and how it unfolded. Both plot and characterization work together and are interwoven. I love how wizarding Britain is depicted, and how Dudley fits himself into it. I love watching him grow and make himself a new life.
