RECCER'S NOTES: Since it's coming up on Halloween, a horror fic seems appropriate. True horror is rare on the ground in fanfiction, and this one is a jewel of the genre. Short, tightly written and profoundly unsettling, it kept me glued to the screen as very few other stories have. Even if you don't normally go for horror (I don't) you may want to read this one anyway for the sheer quality.

The worlds they pass through are sometimes harmless, often horrifying, and always weird. Hopping across worlds like stepping stones on the way to Hel, and there is, as always in these stories, a catch...

First things first: I bookmarked this fic years ago and it seems to have disappeared everywhere but this archived page. If the above link doesn't work, try here, and click the little drop down menu to go from "notes" to "first chapter". Because it's worth it. IT'S SO HORRIBLY, HORRIBLY WORTH IT.
This fic builds Azkaban from a vague nightmare (part of what makes it so terrifying is that we know so little) into something fully-realised and utterly terrible. It focuses on several prisoners of Azkaban, including Sirius, and what haunts them and taunts them as they sit trapped within its walls. I've never forgotten it since first reading it. Truly a haunting fic.

RECCER'S NOTES: Raises the gooseflesh on a sunny afternoon. Richard III tells the story of The Wars of the Roses as if the events were shaped by the calling of monsters from who knows where. The Cthulhu Mythos perfectly fits into the first tetralogy. I also relished reading Henry transformed into a not so sweet character.

RECCER'S NOTES:

This story features one of the most loathed characters from the Harry Potter books - Dolores Umbridge. It was originally written for the

hp_darkfest and it shows.

It's an intriguing view into Umbridge's head and how she became who she is.

catsintheattic strikes here a difficult balance - creating understanding (and a sense of sympathy) without excusing Umbridge's behavior. A truly fascinating character piece.

What impressed me the most though is the fact how seamlessly the story is incorporated into canon. Looking back at the books it fits perfectly in.

It's not an easy read (please heed the warnings!), but very well worth it.

RECCER'S NOTES: Sapphire and Steel is the most beautifully weird TV show I have ever encountered (as one TV guidebook described it: “There are many ways of holding a TV audience... Total lack of explanation is not supposed to be one of them.”) and also one of the most interesting fandoms for fic, as authors each try in their own way to interpret those mysteries and transpose that sense of otherness in the mundane to their writing, and nobody does it quite the same way, so I’m hoping to rec some more S&S before I’m done here.

Anyway, this fic one of the best examples - it’s marvellous, long, plotty, completely true to canon-weirdness (if you can say such a thing) and sharply characterised, with every bit of Sapphire-Steel-Silver interaction a delight. Plus – always a huge bonus for me – not only does it include Silver but it brings in some additional ‘operators’ from the opening credits, and explores just how strange they might be. And if you don’t know the series, but you like exploring the weirdness of time or enjoy ghost stories, why not give it a try? It’s a glorious fic and you really won’t know any less than those of us who have watched the canon, honest…

Oh, wow. This is so intense and creepy. It's such a clever idea, and

rheanna writes it so well. Even if you're not fully familiar with the Bond franchise, I would recommend this.
Bond's mission starts to consume him, and the intensity during his search for answers will stay with you past the end of the fic. So so so good.
