RECCER'S NOTES: OH GOD THIS FIC. Told from the perspective of an increasingly-unbalanced Roy Mustang, this is a superb story. Though the subject matter is grim, the dialogue is sprinkled with humour - Ed and Roy's acerbic relationship is a joy to read - and it never falls into the trap of navel-gazing that plagues so many fanfics. Mustang is a complex character who's done some truly horrible things, and this story has no qualms in showing that. If it has one flaw it's the proofreading, which left out a number of homophone mistakes, but the rest of the writing is fantastic: vivid and to the point. The story structure keeps the suspense right up till the end.

RECCER'S NOTES: "Harry? Good name, good name. Shame about your personality - I used to know another Harry once, he was much better. Bit of an imbecile sometimes, but definitely much better."

There are two kinds of people in the world. First, the bright, curious, adventurous people who seemingly populate the Whoniverse, and then... then there are the Harrys. Featuring a man who is definitely not a pest-control officer, a wonderfully unlikeable OC, and spiders. The voices - both Eleven's and that of the aforementioned Harry - are excellent, and the whole thing is funny throughout.

RECCER'S NOTES: This fic comes with an interesting perspective on the Equalist movement-namely, a firebender who actually wants Amon to remove his bending. It provided a nice twist on events.

It's spectacular, brilliantly crafted and an incredibly original riff on the titular fairy tale. Jordan is so beautifully drawn, her story compelling and the author makes us feel deeply for her. Highly, highly recommended.

This is such a lovely story. I love how this unfolds, the strands of the story parting and coming back together. I love the original characters here, and the background characters. They really come to life here.

RECCER'S NOTES: Sapphire and Steel is the most beautifully weird TV show I have ever encountered (as one TV guidebook described it: “There are many ways of holding a TV audience... Total lack of explanation is not supposed to be one of them.”) and also one of the most interesting fandoms for fic, as authors each try in their own way to interpret those mysteries and transpose that sense of otherness in the mundane to their writing, and nobody does it quite the same way, so I’m hoping to rec some more S&S before I’m done here.

Anyway, this fic one of the best examples - it’s marvellous, long, plotty, completely true to canon-weirdness (if you can say such a thing) and sharply characterised, with every bit of Sapphire-Steel-Silver interaction a delight. Plus – always a huge bonus for me – not only does it include Silver but it brings in some additional ‘operators’ from the opening credits, and explores just how strange they might be. And if you don’t know the series, but you like exploring the weirdness of time or enjoy ghost stories, why not give it a try? It’s a glorious fic and you really won’t know any less than those of us who have watched the canon, honest…

RECCER'S NOTES:

This is a wonderful and chilling character study of Greg Goyle's mother. Since we don't really know much about her beside the fact that she must exist, she is mostly an original character. This doesn't matter though, for in this story we get to know her very well. She is sympathetic without being entirely likeable. I feel for her though.

It is a dark story, with dark themes, and it quite chilled me.

RECCER'S NOTES: This is the opposite of the fic I recced earlier today (it is neither short nor sweet: it's long and dark), but I love, love, love this fic. I'm not often keen for multichapter epics, I'm usually more inclined towards oneshots, but this one is absolutely an exception. The world building is incredible, the characters (both canon ones and OCs) feel completely real, and I can't quite put my finger on what it is about the writing, but it's just perfect.

This charming story instead focuses on minor & original characters and uses a set of tales within a tale to give a fuller picture of life in the bathhouse as well as the backstory of some of its inhabitants. As it's set after the film, there's a hint of Haku's future, too.

A Gothic encounter with Shadow that is not, after all, quite vanquished from the world ... A classic horror must-read!

RECCER'S NOTES: Set in the Fourth Age, the story kicks off from the quotation 'There are older and fouler things than orcs in the deep places of the world.' It's written in a very convincing pastiche of a Poe or Lovecraft short story, yet eventually comes to mesh perfectly with Tolkien's canon. Russ has a gift for atmosphere, and there's great slow-building tension as the mystery unfolds. I wrote back in 2004 that this is 'one of the most unusual LotR-inspired fiction I've ever encountered,' and it stands up very well to rereading a decade later.
