MAIN CHARACTERS: Merry Brandybuck, Pippin Took

FIC SUMMARY:

"The caterpillar started it." Merry and Pippin are infected with a sudden bout of investigative fervour. Can Rivendell cope with two lively hobbits whose hunger for answers threatens to surpass even their hunger for food?

RECCER'S NOTES:

This takes a humorous though and spins it further. It's humor with serious underlining and it's quite touching. I love Merry and Pippin here, and how the other characters react to them.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Goldberry, Melian

FIC SUMMARY: Before the Sun or Moon rose, the River-mother sang to the waters and they awoke.

RECCER'S NOTES:

An origin story for Goldberry: her awakening and coming of age -- to the background of the events of The Silmarillion -- in lovely lyrical prose. Written for Rare Women, the story foregrounds friendship between women, as Goldberry encounters Melian & an original Maiar. The ending is perfect (though gen purists might like to note that Bombadil makes his appearance).

MAIN CHARACTERS: Faramir; cameos of other characters

FIC SUMMARY: Faramir has spent his life in the shadow of great men. As a child, he found his heroes in stories. As he grows up, he seeks them in the world outside his window. But when future generations tell their tales of Faramir's time, who are the heroes who most inspire them?

RECCER'S NOTES:

This is a wonderful character study of Faramir. It is detailed and layered, and I love all the little details and touches.
It also explores what stories mean to people.

RATING/WARNING(S): Unrated | None
WIP?/WORD COUNT: Complete | ~13,500 words
MAIN CHARACTERS: Original characters, [mystery]

FIC SUMMARY: From his hospital bed, a man recalls inheriting his uncle's house in the town of Hollinport. Taking up residence was only the first step of a dark and terrifying journey. A Gothic encounter with Shadow that is not, after all, quite vanquished from the world ... A classic horror must-read!

RECCER'S NOTES: Set in the Fourth Age, the story kicks off from the quotation 'There are older and fouler things than orcs in the deep places of the world.' It's written in a very convincing pastiche of a Poe or Lovecraft short story, yet eventually comes to mesh perfectly with Tolkien's canon. Russ has a gift for atmosphere, and there's great slow-building tension as the mystery unfolds. I wrote back in 2004 that this is 'one of the most unusual LotR-inspired fiction I've ever encountered,' and it stands up very well to rereading a decade later.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Maeglin, NĂ¡mo, [mystery]

FIC SUMMARY: A look at the passage to Mandos, based partly on Greek mythology and Gypsy folklore, in which Maeglin gets what's coming to him.

RECCER'S NOTES: Maeglin, one of The Silmarillion's nastier Bad Boys, meets his match in this unusual story. Zimraphel has a unique take on the Halls of Mandos, the Elvish afterlife, with a surprisingly successful fusion with Greek myth. Strong characterisations and crackling dialogue, sharp & meaningful, with a lovely edge of wry humour. Maeglin's final comeuppence, and his attitude to it, are simply inspired! The identity of the PoV character is cleverly concealed, with a trail of breadcrumbs enticing the reader to guess. The setting is depicted sparingly yet atmospherically.
