MAIN CHARACTERS: Sarah Williams

FIC SUMMARY: Life was a series of labyrinths. You had to figure out which path to take.

RECCER'S NOTES: A character meeting their younger self is one of my favorite tropes ever, and this story is such a beautiful example of it. ❤ Adult Sarah meets herself twice and each version of her helps the other versions in different ways. Everything is wonderfully connected and leads to a really touching conclusion.

This fic is a gift I received during the [community profile] past_imperfect exchange.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Tadashi Hamada, Hiro Hamada, Baymax (Marvel), Robert Callaghan, Gogo Tomago, Honey Lemon (Marvel), Wasabi-No Ginger, Fred | Fredzilla, Alistair Krei, Mochi (Big Hero 6), Aunt Cass, Mrs Matsuda

FIC SUMMARY: Tadashi Hamada assumed, like most people, that once you died that was it. You’re done. End of story, do not pass GO, do not collect $200, everyone go home.

He’s wrong, of course.

Tadashi wakes up after his death, which is already pretty unexpected, and is suddenly thrown into the unseen side of San Fransokyo, where Oni walk the streets window shopping, and you can buy potion ingredients for a reasonable price, so long as you have the right currency. He must learn how to not only navigate this strange new world of supernatural creatures, but how to master his own powers now that he’s become one of them. And of top of that, he’s still worried about Hiro, who can’t see him no matter what Tadashi tries. It’s more than a little overwhelming for a guy.

But Tadashi will have to learn fast, because an evil spirit named Yokai will soon arrive and threaten everything he cares about…

RECCER'S NOTES: Facinating look at a world of the supernatural existing alongside the technological advances of San Fransokyo, complete with Ghost!Tadashi still looking out for his little brother. Has a sequel, The Dead Bury Themselves.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Ginko, Adashino

FIC SUMMARY: After becoming snowbound in Adashino's village, Ginko realizes it's no natural storm keeping him there.

RECCER'S NOTES: A lovely little casefic that captures the feel of the series wonderfully. Contains Ginko being 100% done with everyone, Adashino being Adashino, and an intriguing mushi.

FIC SUMMARY: He and she and an abandoned music hall: a solitary performer plays for an empty audience, keeping Time.

RECCER'S NOTES: It’s gorgeously written and haunting, with so much going on in each small phrase. It captures not only the complementary natures of Sapphire and Steel but also that fascinating feel of the canon, of viewing human life from the outside. Just beautiful.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Sapphire, Steel, Silver, Diamond, Radium, Original Characters

FIC SUMMARY: In 1979, Sapphire and Steel arrive at the Howard Street Hospital to investigate a time break. They have a chance encounter with the receptionist, Daisy. In 1999, Diamond, Radium, and Silver arrive at the Howard Street Hospital to investigate a time break. They have a chance encounter with the receptionist, Daisy.

RECCER'S NOTES: Sapphire and Steel is the most beautifully weird TV show I have ever encountered (as one TV guidebook described it: “There are many ways of holding a TV audience... Total lack of explanation is not supposed to be one of them.”) and also one of the most interesting fandoms for fic, as authors each try in their own way to interpret those mysteries and transpose that sense of otherness in the mundane to their writing, and nobody does it quite the same way, so I’m hoping to rec some more S&S before I’m done here.

Anyway, this fic one of the best examples - it’s marvellous, long, plotty, completely true to canon-weirdness (if you can say such a thing) and sharply characterised, with every bit of Sapphire-Steel-Silver interaction a delight. Plus – always a huge bonus for me – not only does it include Silver but it brings in some additional ‘operators’ from the opening credits, and explores just how strange they might be. And if you don’t know the series, but you like exploring the weirdness of time or enjoy ghost stories, why not give it a try? It’s a glorious fic and you really won’t know any less than those of us who have watched the canon, honest…

MAIN CHARACTERS: Mina Harker, Jonathan Harker, Alice (Alice in Wonderland), Martians (War of the Worlds)

FIC SUMMARY:
Original prompt:
The only characters I nominated are the Narrator and the Martians, but feel free to write about any of the others if you like. I'd love to read anything at all! The only thing I'll beg for is this: please don't "fix" the science with modern knowledge. Old sci-fi is so fascinating to me because yes they're some great stories but also because they're so firmly of their time, they're like glorious little time capsules of every stage of recent scientific discovery and imagination. I'd love to see something in keeping with Wells' era of more limited knowledge but limitless possibility.

Also - so much potential for amazing crossovers! How do Mina and Jonathan/Sherlock and Watson/grown up Alice or Jim Hawkins/Oscar Wilde(?!) fare with the Martians? If you want to write a crossover/fusion type thing I would be all over that. I'm familiar with a lot of Victorian literature, and plenty of modern stuff set around the same time, but even if I don't know your other fandom I'd still be interested in a crossover if there's something you want to write - I get sci-fi disaster fic AND a new fandom, double win :D

RECCER'S NOTES: This fic is amazzziiinnnggg <3 of the three books, the only one I haven't read is War of the Worlds, so I can't comment on that element of it, but I can say that the vocal and turns of phrase in Mina's journal entries felt exactly right, and the whole thing was such a joy to read. Alice's cameo was wonderful too, her little Alice-esque comments felt perfectly Alice without detracting from the seriousness of what's happening to them all. Loved it! <3

MAIN CHARACTERS: Rue and Foxface

FIC SUMMARY: As you step through a hole in the fence you can almost hear the roar of the crowds, the wet choke of tendons snapping, the clink of blood dripping onto dark leaves.

There is no blood now, only flowers.

RECCER'S NOTES: This fic is just so haunting. The fairy tale-esque voice matches the premise of the fic perfectly, and it's an amazing example of just how effective second person can be when executed well. It's creepy as hell, which comes from the exact right mix of the horrible things that happen in canon and the supernatural elements added by the author.

FIC SUMMARY: Adashino realizes an unknown mushi is at work in his village, and he sends a plea for Ginko to come.

RECCER'S NOTES: This lovely fic could be part of canon, and even invokes the feeling I receive whenever I read the manga! Ginko and Adashino's friendship is a delight, and the story and mushi are intriguing. C: An excellent little case fic.
