FIC LINK: The Road This Far Can't Be Retraced
AUTHOR LINK: [livejournal.com profile] silverpenlight
RATING/WARNING(S): R | violence, character death
WIP?/WORD COUNT: complete | 3,500
MAIN CHARACTERS: Velma Dinkley, Scooby Doo, Daphne Blake, Fred Jones, Shaggy Rogers

FIC SUMMARY:

Velma saved them in the end. She knew she did, she wasn't shy about it. Her research gave them machetes, chainsaws and shotguns, garlic and holy water, silver bullets. She was the first one to take aim and squeeze off four shots, the last one taking the zombie right through the forehead and knocking him down hard before he could take a bite out of Fred's arm. She took the knife, the kitchen knife they'd found in Fred's apartment and the only one they had then, and she cut off the head and shot it one last time, spraying blood and brain across the asphalt of the road where they'd stopped for a bathroom break.

RECCER'S NOTES:

I don't even know what to say about this fic. It made me squirm (because it's violent and a bit gross) and also I teared up, and also it's SCOOBY DOO. Velma is forced to become a different person in an apocalyptic world, and it's just brilliant. The character building and the tension and fear is all so wonderful. I love darker spins on childhood classics, and this is one of my all time favourite examples.

WIP?/WORD COUNT: 308 | Complete
MAIN CHARACTERS: Emma Peel, John Steed.

FIC SUMMARY: Escaping the walking dead with style.

RECCER'S NOTES: For some people The Avengers means a fandom different to a more popular one. A ficlet where Steed fetches Mrs Peel to fight zombies. A nicely humorous piece, with a more vexed than usual Mrs Peel.

RATING/WARNING(S): General Audiences, Violence, Post-canon.
WIP?/WORD COUNT: 4946 | Complete
MAIN CHARACTERS: Jonathan Strange, Gilbert Norrell, John Childermass.

FIC SUMMARY: Three practical magicians stymie the onset of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

RECCER'S NOTES: The tale takes the form of letters from a curate to his sister about the odd happenings in his parish, complete with footnotes. This could work for a reader who fancied reading a zombie tale set in Regency England and wasn’t overly familiar with JS&MN. Lalaith writes C19th English well and the thumbnail portraits of the three characters are accomplished.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Laura Ingalls, Mary Ingalls, Ma and Pa Ingalls

FIC SUMMARY: The charming and delightful tale of the Ingalls family’s extraordinary life as they do their best to survive after an onslaught of unspeakable undead horror.

RECCER'S NOTES:

This is just like reading a Little House book, but WITH ZOMBIES. All the little details are perfect - the descriptions of the house and the daily life of the Ingalls family as they live through a zombie apocalypse. It's amazing - sweet, thoughtful, and intense. (Seriously, I dare you not to worry just a little when Charles has to venture beyond the fence.)
