RATING/WARNING(S): Gen, maybe PG for tense/dangerous situations? Nothing more than in the show, but more extensive / detailed.
WIP?/WORD COUNT: Complete, about 90,000 words.
MAIN CHARACTERS: John Sheppard, Rodney McKay, with others from SGA and several child OCs.

FIC SUMMARY: Action/adventure, h/c, friendship. Sheppard and McKay are captured by Wraith, implanted with trackers and released to run and die. Spoilers through Season 2

RECCER'S NOTES: Sholio (aka Friendshipper) excels at writing gen, teamy stories; if you don't know her, check out her page. This story is one of my favorites -- long, meaty, and intense. Although John and Rodney are both implanted with trackers, they're separated on the planet where the Wraith released them. Until they reconnect, we see John being a badass Wraith-killer, and Rodney being all competent at dealing with his situation... and enlisting the aid of, and helping out, a group of Wraith-orphaned children. Things go from bad to worse as John and Rodney work to kill the Wraith that are still hunting them, and find a way to get off the planet. It's a great read that I revisit about once a year; I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I do.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Annie Edison, Troy Barnes, Abed Adir

FIC SUMMARY: “Damn it!” Troy shouted. He pushed out of his chair and slammed the mouse down on the desk, attracting the attention of the rest of the class. “I don’t even know what ‘dysentery’ is!”
Some of the classes that Annie, Abed and Troy have taken together at Greendale over the years.

RECCER'S NOTES:

Amazing fic that really captures the feeling and tone of the show, and the friendship between Annie, Abed and Troy is fantastic. The classes crack me up too, as do some of the original characters teaching them.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Schmendrick, Molly Grue

FIC SUMMARY: “Adventures,” Schmendrick mused, “look for men like Lír. The rest of us are lucky to get one a year, if that.”

RECCER'S NOTES:

Ohh, this is the most beautiful thing ever and it fits the magical, weird, haunting tone of the canon so well. The voices are wonderful, and the adventure that Schmendrick, Molly and the Cat embark upon is that wicked blend of terrible and magical.

A lower corner of the web had become unmoored from the tree trunk on which it had been anchored. It moved slightly, caught by the breeze. The cat crouched, tail twitching, then arced through the air with a hunter's purpose. One paw struck at the loose threads, which unraveled further as the web stuck to his fur, quick as taffy.

Molly grasped the cat around the middle and hauled him to her chest. “You mustn't destroy something so beautiful,” she scolded.

“But I am a cat,” he replied, “and it is my nature.”

RECCER'S NOTES: LOL I'M NOT EVEN SORRY ABOUT REC'ING ANOTHER DOCTOR WHO CROSSOVER, YOU GUYS. This is amazing! There are so, so many little Community jokes hidden in it - paintball! Troy and Abed in the morning! And the magic of the Doctor's life (and the sadness of it) is beautifully touched upon too. Everyone is wonderfully in character, and it's the sort of fic you absolutely hope for when both fandoms and the word "crossover" are mentioned. Go and read it!

MAIN CHARACTERS: Ninth Doctor, Elinor Dashwood, Marianne Dashwood

FIC SUMMARY: "Elinor – do you think it could be real – that he could – that he might be a magician?"
"His speech is rather rough, dearest. More likely he is a day-labourer from the North."

RECCER'S NOTES:

This fic takes place immediately after/during Nine's regeneration. The Dashwood sisters happen upon him, a broken man after the Time War, and it's just - wow.

The characterisation is flawless and I'm definitely adopting this as my head canon. I would say you'll still be able to heartily enjoy this even if you're not familiar with both canons.

The Doctor sat at the pianoforte's keyboard, bashing out the tune with undisguised glee. Sir John clapped in time, a broad grin upon his face, as Mrs. Jennings and Margaret danced as best they could with only one another for partners. Even Mrs. Dashwood nodded her head and smiled broadly, and when the Doctor finished with a flourish, all applauded.

"What a jaunty tune!" exclaimed Mrs. Jennings. "I swear, I never heard its like. So thrilling! Quite the thing for dancing. Tell us, what is it called?"

"Blue Suede Shoes." The Doctor closed the pianoforte lid with apparent regret. "Hasn't quite caught on in London yet, but give it time."

And the second fic in the series, Doctor Who/Gone With the Wind... )

MAIN CHARACTERS: Original characters, canon characters mentioned in passing.

FIC SUMMARY: Tora Manar grew up in the camps, during the Cardassian Occupation of Bajor. She loves Bajor, but she's ready to see the galaxy. Now Bajoran separatists threaten to end her Starfleet career before it can really get started.

RECCER'S NOTES: Unlike all of the other Treks, and most other TV shows, DS9 made religious faith a central part of its story, and treated the subject with respect. A Space for Faith continues in this vein, and does a wonderful job of representing the Bajorian and other religions, and how they fit into the largely secular landscape of the Federation.

There is Bajorian politics, music, and culture in abundance. There is also unflinching discussion of the destruction wrought by the Occupation. The story deals with the ways in which the Federation is helpful with recovery, and the ways in which they can't see past their privilege.

Despite the name, however, the faith of the protagonist is not the central driving force of the plot, though it does feature heavily. I think of this primarily as a story about friendship. The two main characters, a Bajorian recently folded into Starfleet following the formal joining of Bajor to the Federation, and a Vulcan who joined Starfleet to support the war effort, form an unlikely but respectful friendship. It dovetails nicely into the overarching themes of the story.

Don't be put off by the lack of canon characters. All of the OCs are well drawn, easy to like, and nicely developed. Personally, I found that being given new characters through which to experience the setting made the story feel very fresh.

A relatively short read, I highly recommend this one for someone who wants a smart, interesting story that does a great job of coloring in the edges of the existing universe.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Peter Pevensie, Edmund Pevensie, Susan Pevensie, Lucy Pevensie

FIC SUMMARY: After the coronation festivities, the real work begins.

RECCER'S NOTES:

An amazing, lengthy story of journeys and adventure, set just after the Pevensies are crowned. The politics detailed in this fic are amazing and well thought out - the adventures are dangerous and exciting, and the characterisation is wonderful. The original characters are fantastic, and Narnia is wonderfully detailed.

The Pevensies themselves are brilliant - intelligent, brave, but flawed. They struggle to make sense of their new duties at times, but not once shy away from them. All of them have shining moments in this fic - I can't choose a favourite; I love them all.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Finnick Odair, Annie Cresta, Mags

FIC SUMMARY: When Finnick came home from his Games, he had riches -- bloody gold for bloody deeds -- and a trident. So he bought a boat, and he looked out over that horizon.

RECCER'S NOTES:

I'm aware I've already rec'd this author here, but really. I can't even with this fic; it's gorgeous. It's Finnick and Annie being kids and playing pirates. I'm just going to post an excerpt because I can't actually summon up enough wordy flail for it.

He cobbled himself a tricorner hat and braided intricate millinery frippery for the sides, and he diligently practiced flipping it up his arm and onto his head in one rolling move. When he deemed himself ready, he sailed around the coast of the Victor’s Village to the mainland and moored his boat at the far dock; shimmied down the mooring line and ran up the sand towards the citrus grove and the pink row houses and knocked insistently at a door.

“Finnick?”

“Anemone Cresta!” he cried, gesturing wildly, “Wouldst thou – thee – wouldst you be – I am endeavoring in the endeavor… of…” He slumped. “I need help making black sails for my ship.”

Annie Cresta smiled up at wild-haired Finnick Odair, his snapping green eyes ringed in ashes like black kohl and a lopsided tricorner hat on his head. “Why black sails?”

“Because I’m a pirate now,” Finnick said plainly, as though it should be obvious. “If you ever have seen a ship on the horizon what has black sails, it can be naught but a pirate’s ship.”
