Or, Steve builds a training program, a team, and new life for himself.

RECCER'S NOTES:

I had to double check to make sure I hadn't rec'd this one here before! This is one of my favourite team/found family fics. It focuses on Steve training SHIELD recruits, teaching them skills and how to be part of a team, and it makes him focus on himself and his own team too. It's got just the right amount of sad/feels, and it's funny and sweet. All of the character voices are perfect.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Elsa, Rapunzel, Eugene Fitzherbert/Flynn Rider, King of Corona, Queen of Corona, Mother Gothel

FIC SUMMARY:

Instead of being sequestered in her room, Elsa is sent by her parents to her Uncle and Aunt, the King and Queen of Corona. King Thomas and Queen Primrose are thunderstruck at the idea of caring for the girl, since their own daughter, Rapunzel, was kidnapped as a baby and is still missing.

Elsa and Anna write letters to each other while Elsa grows up in Corona and Anna grows up in a castle full of people and life. Away from the anxiety exacerbated by her parents, Elsa has more control of her secret ice powers.

Elsa's fate to become the Snow Queen, however, is not so easily escaped.

RECCER'S NOTES:

This fic isn't finished yet, but we're almost there. The first few chapters have some minor spelling/grammar issues but if you're able to get past that the story is FANTASTIC. The characters are all fully fleshed out and the plot is intense and engaging. I love the relationships woven together in this one, and the found family feels hit all my buttons. As we near the end of the fic there are some references to Rapunzel/Eugene, but the story at heart is about Elsa, sent to live with her aunt and uncle in Corona and doing her best to be a good, dependable person and member of the royal family.

The author has chosen not to use warnings. Just very briefly trying to think back, if you want to be sure before going in, I'd say it could be triggering for depression/anxiety, and there is canon-typical violence.

This fic is hilarious and full of team friendship. The Avengers decide to involve Steve in a heap of burger challenges, and sometimes get involved themselves. One of my favourite parts is the description of each t-shirt he wins whenever he's successful.
A really fun, feel good fic, and one that doesn't necessarily require much canon knowledge to enjoy.

This story is perfect in tone, the Way family is so atmospheric and creepy (cobwebs! pet octopi! creepy door knockers!) and Frank just loves it. It's the first time he's fit in anywhere. These kids are so charming and sweet and I heart-eyed my way through this story.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Apple, Tenar, Ged, Spark

FIC SUMMARY: The women of Earthsea: falling, flying, stealing, speaking. Post-Tehanu.

RECCER'S NOTES: Earthsea is a series of fantasy novels by Ursula Le Guin, which introduced the wizarding boarding school a good three decades before Ms Rowling, and made the main characters dark-skinned long before it was fashionable. It's one of the fandoms of my heart, and if you're interested, you can read my fandom summary & find many more recs at the late lamented [livejournal.com profile] crack_van.

Le Guin revisited the rather masculine world of her original trilogy in Tehanu, a novel about the heroine, Tenar, after (most of) the adventure's over, and how to find the magic in everyday life. A lot of more recent fanfiction is set around this novel and embraces its female-centric vision of Earthsea. 'Mother Tongue' is a good example, a quiet coda that reads like the novel's missing final chapter. It focuses on Tenar's adult daughter Apple, a very minor character in the original, and brings her to life as she tries to understand her mother's unusual choices. Apple makes a wonderful outside PoV on the main characters, and elle_dritch gives her interesting thoughts on chosen vs birth families and the nature of manhood.

All we know about the Chudley Cannons from the books is that they are orange, terrible, Ron's favorite team, and on the cover of his book is pictured beater Joey Jenkins. But Roberval takes those tiny details and gives us a team that breaks your heart with its heartfelt warmth.

RECCER'S NOTES:

I will admit it took me some time to agree with the Doctor's voice in this one, but the further I read, the more right it became, and the more I realised just how very broken he is in canon at this point. He is also Rude and Not Ginger.

The Serenity crew are also broken after the events of The Big Damn Movie, and together they and the Doctor begin to rebuild themselves, putting together the pieces of their existence, fighting common enemies and forging wonderful bonds.

This is a great, lengthy fic that hits my 'found family' buttons in all the right ways. I especially love the way Mal reacts to the Doctor, and the slow, steady build of trust and respect between them (after a bit of a rocky start).

Madeline is probably my favorite thing about Burn Notice (aside from Jeffrey Donovan's forearms, but this is a gen community, so we won't go there). Women over a certain age don't show up much on television, certainly not in the form of opinionated, complex characters. This is a short story, more character study than anything else. It highlights her relationship with Fiona, and touches on the contradictions and regrets that Madeline has to live with. If you're familiar with the source, it's worth taking a minute to read this one.

RECCER'S NOTES: I had to double check the tags on this community to make sure that I hadn't rec'ed this before, because I intended to the moment I read it, and I was almost positive I had. Oh well, that means I get to do it now.

So, first off, please don't be put off by the fandom. If Disney Princesses aren't your thing, there is still a very good chance that you'll like this. I very much suggest giving it a shot, even if Disney gives you hives. Because these? These are not the princesses you're expecting. These princesses attend an all-girls liberal arts college with Mulan as their R.A. They're smart and funny and highly pragmatic, and not a single one of them has a woodland creature entourage.

Instead, Mulan is attending college after a stint in the army, Belle is dealing with her stalker by educating herself about rape culture, and the young women from truly messed up homes are creating a found family in each other.

It's a fantastic deconstruction of the Disney movies, but not a cruel one. It's just great satire, and also flat-out funny while being terribly sweet as well.

RECCER'S NOTES: This story has been the treat of my day. It's a brilliant little character study in which Bruce learns to cook and takes care of his teammates at the same time. There's not too much in the way of plot, but the character moments are sublime. It has my favorite type of Bruce characterization: tough, sarcastic, and prickly, with a tread of sadness running through him (BBY! *sniff*) but with underlying gentleness and a heart of gold.

FIC SUMMARY: The Avengers pretend to be kids and play kiddie games as a way to learn to trust each other and work through their super-sized (pun intended) baggage. Later on, they also take care of each other in other ways. It's very much a series about fixing things.

RECCER'S NOTES: The characters cry a bit more than I find plausible, but no, no one's utterly woobified. Certainly they're more IC than the premise would seem to suggest, and no, no one lisps. At most, there's the very occasional "'kay" instead of "okay". The strengths of this series are in showcasing care, how needs are met, and how to deal with problems constructively. The series's main theme is probably psychological healing. It probably sounds like it's not your thing. Try it anyway. Read the first fic, Love Is For Children, and see if the rest of the series appeals to you. My personal favorite is Splash. Birthday Girl is the one where Natasha Romanova has a birthday party, and there's so much buildup that it's actually plausible. Also, Fury is a dick in this fic. Note that Guys and Dolls does contain minimal mostly-implied romance (nothing that actually happens on-screen couldn't be platonic, though). Heads-up that Hide and Seek is very YMMV in terms of quality, and Eggshells might hit some squicks even if you like the rest of the series.

FIC SUMMARY: The serum's given Steve a lot, but it hasn't taken anything away from him. Not even the things he never wanted in the first place.

RECCER'S NOTES:

I can't explain why, but for some reason, the idea of Steve not being 100% cured of all his ailments after the serum is one I really like. This fic is fantastic - some lovely hurt/comfort, great humour, and fantastic team dynamics. Steve's voice is wonderful, and Tony is definitely a star here too.

When Steve comes round, the first thing he realises is that he isn't dead. The second is that the bone-deep cold he'd felt before is now just a slight chill in his extremities, and his breath is moving easily in and out of his lungs, although his throat feels a little sore. For a second, he's reminded of waking up in a fake recovery room in New York, the same disorientation, the same sense memory of having recently been so cold.

Then he opens his eyes to find Stark glaring at him from way too close.

“You know that was a dick move, right?” says Stark. “Do you know how many extra bodyguards I would've had to hire before telling Fury I killed Captain America? I'm not talking for, like, a day, either. That guy plays the long game.”
