WIP?/WORD COUNT: complete, 644 words
MAIN CHARACTERS: Gertrude Yorkes, Molly Hernandez

FIC SUMMARY: Molly and Gert enjoy something they never thought they would get to experience living in Los Angeles: a snow day.

RECCER'S NOTES: A pre-canon ficlet about Molly, Gert and their best/worst snowman ever. It's funny, touching and sweet, and it always makes me smile. :) If you just want to read a happy story, this one doesn't require canon knowledge, but at the same time it's perfectly in character.

I got it as a gift during the Marvel/DC Holiday Bingo Exchange.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Georgia Lass, Roxy Harvey

FIC SUMMARY: George gets a day off. She stresses to Roxy about this.

RECCER'S NOTES: George spends a day with Roxy and it's full of character development, witty dialogue and friendship. It's definitely a feel-good fic bordering on fluff, but keep the canon in mind (death and grief are mentioned several times).

For now I'll probably keep reccing fics I got as gifts in exchanges (they're usually the most relevant to my interests) but eventually I'll run out of them and I'll have many others to post. :) This one was part of [community profile] waybackexchange.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Naomi Wildman, Seven of Nine, Kathryn Janeway, B'Elanna Torres

FIC SUMMARY: Holodeck Access Records (Weekly History) - Wildman, Naomi

RECCER'S NOTES: One of my favorite things about Naomi is that, even though she's a kid, she gets to do her own thing and explore everything she's interested in, even if it could be considered "too mature for her age". And this fic is full of this freedom of playing, learning, researching, creating, making friends, making mistakes... It's perfect. I'm also in awe of the Author's creativity when coming up with all the different holodeck programs. And it's one of the cutest fics I've ever read in my life (and I'm not saying it just because I got it as a gift at [community profile] space_swap). ♥

RECCER'S NOTES: This is a wonderful ficlet. Despite it's just 200 words a lot is said. Love Luna's pov. And even though there's still a sense of the devastation of seventh year there's hope too.

FIC SUMMARY: The life and death of Regent Virini - one of the quiet ones history is bound to forget.

RECCER'S NOTES: This is such a wonderful character study. The background Amatara made up for Virini makes so much sense, it becomes my headcanon. I'd love to read more about him.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Merry Brandybuck, Éomer

FIC SUMMARY: Meriadoc the Magnificent is a popular figure of folklore, but how many of the stories are true? What, for example, is to be made of the claim that he regularly corresponded with a king? After centuries of bitter debate, at last these questions can be answered. Thanks to an extraordinary discovery, Meriadoc and his king can speak to us in their own voices, clear across the gulf of years.

RECCER'S NOTES: I love the historical style of this, how a historian looks back on the start of the fourth age. Reading The Lord of the Rings everything feels immediate, but I often wonder how it would look like centuries later.
I love how Merry and Éomer's friendship shines through in their letters. I love the glimpses we see of them.

FIC SUMMARY: Sirius needs a new wand. Ron needs to be taken seriously. They both find an adventure.

RECCER'S NOTES: I really like the relationship between Ron and Sirius here. They bond here over feeling kind of useless. And I love that the story shows that they aren't.
Love Sirius' characterization especially here. I think the author really captures book 5 Sirius.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Nicola Murray, Malcolm Tucker, (Ollie Reeder, Glen Cullen, Julius Nicholson)

FIC SUMMARY: During the election, Nicola Murray hits a wall.

RECCER'S NOTES: Politics fic! Nicola gets a rare chance to shine here, because for all her many (many, many many) flaws, she was one of the few ideologically honest people in DoSAC. And her voice is brilliant, and the dialogue is brilliant, and the characterisation is brilliant, and of all the fics I want to write on my skin until they can be absorbed as a permanent part of my system, this one's damn well near the top of the list.

And when you're done with that, head to Close Your Eyes and Think of Agincourt, by the same author and set prior to Uncertain.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Roy Mustang, Edward Elric

FIC SUMMARY: Stranded in the middle of the Eastern Desert, Roy Mustang must try to get himself and a concussed Edward across it safely before he completely loses his mind.

RECCER'S NOTES: OH GOD THIS FIC. Told from the perspective of an increasingly-unbalanced Roy Mustang, this is a superb story. Though the subject matter is grim, the dialogue is sprinkled with humour - Ed and Roy's acerbic relationship is a joy to read - and it never falls into the trap of navel-gazing that plagues so many fanfics. Mustang is a complex character who's done some truly horrible things, and this story has no qualms in showing that. If it has one flaw it's the proofreading, which left out a number of homophone mistakes, but the rest of the writing is fantastic: vivid and to the point. The story structure keeps the suspense right up till the end.
"Evil, evil thing, to make someone want revenge."

MAIN CHARACTERS: Ninth Doctor, the Brigadier

FIC SUMMARY: "Who are you and what did you do with the Brigadier?"

RECCER'S NOTES: What did the Doctor get up to in those ten seconds at the end of "Rose"? Turns out he buggered off to see the Brigadier, and more or less refused to go away. Reasons to read this: 1. It's Nine and the Brig; 2. it's by Cryptile. Dialogue sharp as knives. The Brigadier's voice is delightful, his reaction to the intruder memorable, and the brittle wrongness of this new Doctor as the Brig watches him about the place sticks in my throat and burns.

Consider this an author rec, too, because every fic on Cryptile's profile is fantastic, with that balanced DW blend of drama and comedy and absolutely impeccable characterisation. One of the very best.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Tony Stark, Christine Everhart

FIC SUMMARY: It’s been 'a hell of a year' since industrialist Tony Stark owned up to his alter ego in a move that stunned observers and longtime aides alike. With the US facing unprecedented homegrown suicide attacks, Iron Man's contribution to national security is more than ever under scrutiny. As she follows Stark during a year of crisis, exclusively for Vanity Fair, Christine Everhart explores the many contradictions of the man behind the mask, uncovers tales of personal loyalty, patriotism gone awry and corporate betrayal, and asks whether Iron Man is the embodiment of an outdated American fantasy—a self-made, unilateral, technological solution to hopelessly complex problems—and whether he can survive the violent encounter with reality.

RECCER'S NOTES: A mock Vanity Fair article on Iron Man. This is one of those fics that everyone must have surely read by now, but I have a grand total of six K titles in my faves list, so... Not that it doesn't deserve the publicity, because there's a small chance you haven't read this yet and if this is the case you should do so, immediately. It's that rare thing, a fic that really makes you stop and think, and then keep thinking long after you've finished reading. Plus! Photos, formatting, and a magazine writing style that makes me wibble.

MAIN CHARACTERS: Spock, James T. Kirk, Christine Chapel, Leonard McCoy

FIC SUMMARY: "A joyless smile, a shuttered look, a turn of shoulders. Is this how friendship ends?" Set after "The City on the Edge of Forever". Spock fears the worst.

RECCER'S NOTES: Second-person narrative is a rare choice for fanfic and, for that matter, also for profic, but oh how this story makes it work. It does a great job of portraying the careful balance of reason and feeling in Spock's mind, and the disconnect between "what you think" and "what you end up saying" was painfully familiar. Also: Christine Chapel is awesome.

(There is a leeetle bit of non-gen-ness in the interaction between Spock and Chapel, but it holds close to what we see in canon.)

FIC SUMMARY: Nadya's mother is sick, her classmates lack revolutionary commitment and the Communist future is still far from being built. But she struggles on.

RECCER'S NOTES: A glimpse at Elizabeth's life before she was a spy back in Russia, and how crapsack her life could have been at that time with an ailing mother, an awful neighbor, and no time to spend time as a child. (Although the fic is a pre-season fic, there is information revealed from the latest season of the show.)

MAIN CHARACTERS: Natsume Takashi, Fujiwara Touko, Fujiwara Shigeru

FIC SUMMARY: The more Touko hears about Natsume Takashi, the more confused she becomes. The stories she hears are of a selfish child acting out for attention, or worse, but all she can see is a sad, lost child in need of a place to put down roots so that he can settle his mind.

RECCER'S NOTES: This is such a wonderful characer study of bot Touko and of Natsume as we see him through her eyes. I love the way the story flows, and how Touka sees more than the others do. There's such a gentleness and kindness to her that makes me love her just the more.

FIC SUMMARY: Lorcan and Lysander couldn’t be more different. Lorcan loves the fact that his parents are Magizoologists, and is thrilled to be accompanying them to the Amazon Rainforest to track down a legendary dark spirit. Lysander is...less enthused.

RECCER'S NOTES: This is a wonderful look at two brothers and their relationship to each other, and to their parents. Love the realistic feel of their dynamic, and the plot was very engrossing.
