An origin story for Goldberry: her awakening and coming of age -- to the background of the events of The Silmarillion -- in lovely lyrical prose. Written for Rare Women, the story foregrounds friendship between women, as Goldberry encounters Melian & an original Maiar. The ending is perfect (though gen purists might like to note that Bombadil makes his appearance).

RECCER'S NOTES: I really love Rachel's character arc throughout the earlier Friends seasons, where she gradually finds her feet. This fic captures it so beautifully, and it also manages to pin down the general atmosphere of those earlier episodes. The characters and their interactions are dead on. This is exactly the sort of friendship fic I love to read over and over <3

Oh wow, this is perfect. The character voices are spot on, and I love anything that has Amy and Rosa bonding. Full of quick, funny moments just like the show, and such a clever idea to bring two strikingly different characters together.

galentinesday, and it's so much fun. Three amazing, brainy, badass ladies all interwoven. Natasha is particularly brilliant in this and I love the way her friendship with Sharon is built.

Luna wore her self on her sleeve, sure enough, all she was and wanted to be on display for a scornful world, but she kept her heart close. Luna described others' kindnesses, over a loud speaker or in a whisper, with a tone of mild surprise.

Ginny, who had a dark she never asked for in her chest and basilisk venom in her invisible scars, appreciated that Luna didn’t expect anything from her, except an ear, sometimes, a hand, an adventure.

Three boys called Luna "Loony" in the Great Hall and flicked peas at her. Ginny rose to a modest height and a towering rage and felt like a worthy lioness for the first time since the Chamber.

RECCER'S NOTES:

This is the sequel to the rec I posted yesterday, and I think this is my favourite of the two. There are a few little American/Brit inconsistencies but not enough to truly jolt me out of the story. The parallels to Shakespeare are wonderfully done. The building of Ginny's friendship with Luna is crafted carefully, and the building of her character even more so. I don't think you need to have read the first fic to understand this one at all, but they sit so wonderfully together I would recommend it.

This is a wonderful charming story of friendship and growing up. I really love the OFC here, from whose point we see the other characters. They are all so very well thought up and fleshed out.

The tone is just right, and it fits so well the time and place.

RECCER'S NOTES: I love so many things about this fic. It feels real, both in the sense that it seems like a conversation these two women could actually have in later years, and in the sense that the author uses turns of phrase that pleasantly echo Blyton's style. (Like… can we have fanfic writers redo those terrible published sequels? Please?).

Anyway, it's fic like this that makes me so happy that Enid Blyton fanfic exists <3 Both girls have grown in maturity and wisdom since their school days, and their conversation feels so natural and right. There are a lot of little touches throughout that really makes it feel like part of the series and, gah, I just love it.

RECCER'S NOTES: This is a really lovely, introspective piece, delving into each of the girls' thoughts as they lay awake at night the day before they are to split up and go home for Christmas. We see Rose's sweet nature, Blanche's nostalgia, Dorothy's melancholy ~ and a pitch-perfect Sophia story, right before they devour one last holiday cheesecake =) I never thought I'd find Golden Girls fic (much less anything I'd like!) but this is really great, and feels like a missing scene from the canon.

Beatrice_Otter's Faith in Three Movements, which is a wonderful story too.

Matters of Faith (The Ouroboros Bridge) is a great character study of Susan Ivanova. She is fleshed out here, and when I read the story I could see the Ivanova I saw on the show, and how she grew.
It is also an interesting look at faith and religion, and how she saw it and how it shaped her life.

RECCER'S NOTES: Doyle's one of my favourite DW writers; I think this brief conversation piece is one of her best. It centres around the Time War, with a clever, disturbing look at the fallout that will send you back to the start as soon as you've finished the final paragraphs. The characters, all women, leap off the page, and their humour, bravery & pragmatism lighten what might otherwise be a very dark piece. Set on Gallifrey, it's also imbued with a lovely wistful sense of place.

I'm tagging this for author rec as I've never encountered a story of Doyle's that wasn't worth reading, and many of her works are gen. She also writes in the Buffyverse.
